What bike is as good as the VFR1200?

It's come time to part with the VFR1200F. I just have too many bikes in the garage, so I have to clean house, and the VFR has to go, unfortunately. I'm just wondering if there's any other sport tourer or adventure tourer that has as smooth fast, and good sounding engine as the VFR. I've ridden a lot of. Bikes over the years, an nothing has come close to the feel of the VFR yet. If something is comparable, I want to know so I can perhaps have that same feeling once again some time in the future.

 

Sounds like you're getting rid of the wrong bike.....I will never give up my white 93. May have it buried with me.

 

I absolutely am giving up the wrong bike but the problem is that I bought a BMW R1200GS Rallye in 2018, which certainly doesn't have nearly the engine of the VFR, but selling it now will create an unfathomable money loss that I just don't want to face.

 

I would rather live with a money loss than a VFR loss.

 

You're probably right. No real love for the CBR or the Speed Triple, so they can go for sure. Is there any other bike that might have that solid feel and strong, smooth motor? I was thinking that the Yamaha Tracer GT might be alright, albeit with a smaller (but strong) motor.

 

The new 2020 Ninja 1000 is nicely setup with cruise control, TFT display, and other tasty bits stock, seems like a nice buy for the price?

 

What's the engine like?

There aren’t many sport-touring motorcycles out there nowadays so let us know what you find. If you don’t like the Boxer engine perhaps the Multistrada would be an option? My friend tours on a KTM 1290. It has quite the engine!

 

The Multistada's are interesting. Never owned a Ducati, and I know little about the L-Twin. Is it a rattly motor like a parallel twin or v-twin? Or is it more like an inline four, or v-four?
I know people have had issues with Ducatis, but I really think that it's overblown. I think this engine has been around for awhile, so curious to hear about reliability on these. It's usually the higher spec crotch rockets that have the issues, I think.

 

If you want a V4 that has the best power to weight ratio an Aprillia Tuono factory fits the bill. To make them truly sport touring some after bits are needed, better wind screen and travel bags. If you read the forums about guys that tour on them you will want one. The sound and power are insane.

175 hp, 407 lb dry weight, Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes, insane electronics.......... V4...... smooth linear power delivery, and that sound.

 

I have never ridden a Multistrada, but I have toured on Ducati V-twins - a 944cc ST2, a 916cc ST4, and a 996cc ST4s (which is basically a Superbike set up for touring). The engines are nothing like a buzzy parallel twin or a lumpy Harley V-twin, but they aren't like a V-four or an inline four either. I rode the Ducatis for looooong days in the saddle without fatigue.

Ducati reliability is fine if the bikes are maintained according to their service schedules. You can research the known gremlins for the 1260 Multis (electrical, quick-shifter, etc.) but I imagine the 1260 Multistrada (claimed 165hp and 96.2 lbs-ft torque) would be worth comparing to your VFR.

Or you could just keep the VFR1200F . . .

 

I love my ‘95 VFR750, but also love the Yamaha FJR1300 for touring duty. I’ve had 3 FJRs, one of each generation. The ‘05 felt like a bigger VFR to me. The ‘12 and my current ‘16 feel a bit larger and heavier of course, but are lots of fun, powerful and very comfortable to me. I’ll keep that old VFR750 until I can no longer ride though, because it just feels so right.

Another option - BMW S1000XR

 

I had two FJR's, great bikes, but these sport tourers are 650 lbs. So, keep the VFR for when you want to take the lighter one for a spin.

IMHO, there is no better Motorcycle than an MC-19, It just keeps delivering, ignore the stats, if you ever get the chance to take one for test ride you will know what I mean.
