I feel like an idiot asking this, but can anyone fill me in on how to remove the seat on an 87 vfr750. I bought the bike and do not have the manual yet.

Put the key in the helmet lock and turn it anti clockwise. You will feel a little resistance and hear a slight click as you release the seat latch. Lift the rear of the seat and pull it backwards, job done.

Sorry to resurrect this, but... HELP!

Well, I'm pleased someone else was brave enough to ask this first...

I've had my '89 VFR (F-K) for 9 months now, and I haven't worked it out either... and I have this set of throwover panniers that I was intending to fit this week for a trip!

The response above hasn't worked for me though, in fact it was the first thing I tried. Helmet lock works fine, but there is no movement anti-clockwise at all. Feels like it's up against a hard stop, not just gunged up, and I don't want to force it and break my only key!

Should I be making with the penetrating oil, or is mine different somehow??? Is there any other way of releasing the seat so I can clean out the lock mechanism?

try turning the key as you unlock the helmet turning it a bit further. at the same time lift up on the back of the seat...should unlock....if you can't get it that way. pull your fairing off(left side rear) and you should have access to the latch pull the little arm and the seat should pop right off

Thanks for the response, but nope...

And the FK has a one piece tailpiece and I'm guessing the bolts to remove it are under the seat!

    I'll investigate further later.

Are you up REALLY late or REALLY early?

I've been away for a long weekend (without the panniers :frown:) and was hoping someone might have thrown some light on this before I got back. A friend is picking up the bike today for a trip to Ireland, and I'd love to get to the bottom of this before he leaves.

I pulled the side covers off yesterday, but they don't offer any clues. The tailpiece which hides everything has a bolt under each cover, which is easy, one under the back of the seat, which I can get out with a bit of fiddling, and is then only held on by the bolts through the grab rails under the seat...

This bike is the very last of the 1st VFR's that didn't come to the States... it's a 1989 F-K with skinny 17" wheels and a double sided swingarm. Has anyone on here got one and could conclusively tell me exactly how the seat is supposed to open? If I knew for sure I'd know how and where to attack it.

My 86 VFR 750 had me puzzled for awhile. No helmet lock or key. No handle. Finally found the end of a cable with no handle but the little lead piece that probably once held the handle. Towards the rear of the seat on the left side. I slight pull while lifting the rear of the seat and it was off. Neither of the manuals I have were of any help.

Thanks for the reply. Sold the VFR 5 years ago, never did get into the seat! Amazingly it seems I'm still a member of this forum and still subscribed to this thread... been riding a Triumph Sprint since the Viffer went. Can't say I've missed it. :playful:

Geez, bought a 1987 VFR700F2, here in Canada, where they were never imported. Can't get the seat off either! Are Triumphs any cheaper in England than the Japanese bikes? I remember that bikes in England were very expensive. Does gas cost more than $1.00 per liter? or half a pound? In Canada it is about $1.04/litre.

I got it! When you open the helmet lock, if you look behind the actual hook, you'll see a lever. You pull on said lever to undue the seat latch! Bingo-Bango-Bongo! See, if you wait for an answer, it will come! Maybe 6 years later...
