Hey all, So I've come across an odd problem. I just bought a 98 VFR800 Yesterday, Started it to inspect it, Took it off the truck and started it again to pull it into the driveway. Went outside to start it and pull it into the garage and it would not fire up. Key into on postion Engine killswitch Set to run Fuel pump comes on and primes Hit starter and cranks but will not fire up. Bike In neutral, Tried with kickstand both up and down. Im very confused as to what may have happened in that 20 minutes and maybe sombody could help me out?
We may need some more information. Has your '98 been ridden on a regular basis? What is it's history? Any recent repairs, or updates? How many km on the clock? Was the fuel in the tank fresh? Rust in the tank? Have you measured the voltage of the battery? If so, what did you find? Is there a mouse nest in the air box? Any of these could be helpful to know when looking for a solution.
It was ridden atleast twice a week, Previous owner just took it off the road 3 weeks ago. Motor was rebuilt fresh last year by dealer. Just over 60,000 km(On everything but motor) Motor guessed to be around 15-20,000 Fresh gas no rust Brand new battery Clean box
I had my normally very healthy ST1300 flood on me and it wouldn't start. The fix is to turn the throttle full open then turn it over. The FI system works out that you want to clear a flood and shuts off the injectors while you do this. Then try starting normally.
Big thanks too you. It was indeed flooded, I did what you said and it started up within about 6 seconds of having it wide open and cranking. That's quite a cool feature.
Many ECU's seem to stay in "enriched starting mode" if shut down before a certain engine temperature is reached. WOT is the fix, or let it warm up reasonably well before shutting down.
when I used to snowmobile with a bunch of people some machines would flood on the trailer as you were towing if the gas was not shut off. something about negative draft sucking fuel through the carbs or something to that effect
