Just figured I'd provide some insight into a recent experience with Honda, with regards to the wiring harness recall issued in 2005. Honda has discontinued the wiring harnesses, which I believe now renders them unable to fulfill the recall. This documents the experience my friend has had with his '03, where the main relay fuse was completely melted and the entire harness is charred. My '02 was in around August and just the connector near the starter relay was damaged and they were able to replace just that piece, but they are unable to do full harness recall at this time. I will provide more info as I find more out.
I had my 2002 into a dealer near Toronto about 4 years ago and they ended up replacing all the harnesses under warranty. The mechanic commented that he didn't know how the bike was even running they were so bad...
That certainly seems to be the case here. Quick update from Honda: they are now unable to complete the recall if the entire harness requires replacing. I guess 17 years would be enough time. VFRness is now the cheap and relatively easy solution. $55 USD and an hour will have your bike running normally.
