Fuel tank leaks

It will always eventually fail. And usually not in your driveway.

 

i remember once that i covered a leak hole with aluminum foil and then covered that with the JB and it held up well cuz fuel wasn't touching the JB.

 

I tried that with my Magna tank. Still failed.

The radiator shop was not too happy when I brought him my eff up and he had to torch it out.

They burned the tank out and applied a liner. That was around 5 years ago.. tank is still holding up (knock on wood)

I already posted that tank for him. He's worried about having the same issues for that amount of money.

But I think starting off with a different tank, even with some issues, as long as it has never been lined, wouldn't be a bad move.

 

Agreed. Worth a gamble I think. there are not many out there. $199 if its solid and relatively clean isnt too bad.

I am communicating with the seller to be absolutely sure there is no previous liner in there. You really need a fiberscope/boroscope to see the areas where the liner can hide. I thought I had all of it out of mine but looks like I was wrong.

On another topic, do you know who that vendor is in the San Francisco area that cuts tanks open and repairs them?

Wow, that is crazy. I figured that much resin would have to seal it. The resin must not adhere to itself very well. I will cross that option off the list.

Yep, I just sent the email, hope they respond with good news. What a friggin ordeal. I have never had a tank this bad in all my years.

It did not have ANY signs of it being this bad when I bought the bike. That KREEM SH!T is the death of these tanks!

 

So the Yahoo with the tank on Ebay has not responded to my questions about the tank. Still hoping for a response.

In the meantime, I fixed that F-ing leak with Steel Stick and it is NOT leaking.............YET.

Hopefully it will work for a while, not planning on any long trips on this bike, just going to the gym and back right now.

 

What is this "Gym " thing you speak of ?

The climate here is much more conducive to going to the gym, as I don't have to drive through the snow!

 

I have one in the basement Jim, im just not good at attending. LOL

 

I prepped the shit out of a SL100 tank that had some pin holes along the bottom next to the seam. It was a bummer cuz the inside was actually really nice and the paint is perfect. Cleaned the tank out really good, sanded the area down to bare metal and cleaned everything again really good. Used the gas tank repair putty (pretty much Steel Stick I think), it's a two part that you kneed together to activate and you can repair crankcases and fuel tanks even when they are leaking. I always carry some on my dirt bike. I pressed it into the holes as best I could and then formed a nice patch.

It lasted about 3 years. I knew the day would come. I think it lasted that long because it actually wasn't a seam or welded bracket area.

 

Yeah, it will fail eventually. But I think the prep is the key item here. Get all the paint off and rough the metal up good and it seems to seal off pretty good. I have never tried it on a welded area like on this tank so I am not holding my breath it will work. I am not mounting it on the bike for several days just to make sure it is not going to leak.

 

Hmmmm, sorry for the delay. I can't seem to locate his info now and I have looked everywhere. Let me ask around and see if I can get it. If it was me, I'd stop fucking around and end this thing by cutting it open and really fixing it. I'll let you know what I come up with. If you really want to get it going, a couple of the fellas already posted links to similar services back a bit.
