6th Gen OEM Oil Filter Number

I am sure someone here should be able to help. Years ago, I discovered that the same oil filter for the Honda Civic, and probably all Honda 4 wheeled vehicles, would fit on my 6th gen VFR. It was a little larger in size, but it could be squeezed in behind the cooling hoses and fit very well. From there, I went and bought Boash Filters, and ran those for years on the VFR. I bought them when they were on sale by the half dozen as I was changing oil in not only my bike, but my wife's and son's Civics too.

Now, I added and Africa Twin to the stable. On my first oil change, I went to put one of these larger filters on the Twin, but it would not fit due to the metal structure of the new bike. So, I had to get the OEM, which looked identical to the OEM for the VFR. And, it had no number on it, so I could not go to the local auto parts store and find a suitable non OEM filter for my Twin.

Can anyone tell me if they use another filter on their VFR that is the same size as OEM? If so, can you please tell me what the filter number is so I can research the filters available to me to make sure I get a good as or better filter for far less money that what one pays at a dealership for OEM filters?

Been using HiFlo HF204 filters for many years on my 3 previous 6gens and my current 8gen. I think the Africa Twin uses the same type.

Warning - Do not use any filter that has the spot welded hex nut on top of the filter!

 

Thank you very much for this. Exactly what I was looking for. I am well aware of the absolute shit oil filters put out by K&N. Their catastrophic failures are well documented here in VFRW.

One more question for you if you don't mind. Are those filter you are using, the same capacity as the OEM? This is the trouble I am running into. I think all Honda bike filters are the same, as all Honda's car filters are the same. The difference between the two is that their car filters have a larger capacity and are longer. But the rest of it is the same as the bikes. I could get the car filter on by manipulating the rubber coolant hoses on my VFR, but there is a frame member on the Twin that I can't get the larger filter by. And the OEM filter by Honda does not have a filter number on it. I need that number to make sure that any new filter I switch to will in fact be able to be installed on the Twin.

 

Randy, there are longer and shorter versions in the aftermarket filters..... they fit the majority of Hondas, Yamahas and Kawi's (Suzuki's have a different thread size). I wouldn't worry about wanting a long one..... if you change every oil change (Honda says every other change), I guarantee you they are not dirty enough to worry about and have almost the same filtering capacity of the long ones..... ride more, worry less.

I agree. It is just that the OEM from Honda is about 25 bucks or more here from the dealerships. If I can find out what the filter number is for the EOM shorter filter, then go after an aftermarket filter, I will save a bundle in time. Now I have a few numbers I can look up. The longer one simply does not fit in the space like it did o the VFR. On re-read, I discovered you won the grand prize today. The Bosch 3300. Bosch is what I have used for years. The Bosch 3323 is the one that fits the VFR and is the same as what Honda puts on their cars and vans or whatever.

I didn't switch to the larger filter thinking there was any benefit to filtering or flow volume. It was simply a matter of convenience. I also have two Honda Civics to do oil changes on as well, and rather than keeping three or four of each on hand, I just used the one size. I have always, my whole life with every vehicle I owned, changed the filter on every oil change. Except this first oil change on the Twin when I discovered, later in the evening, the filter I had on hand, did not fit. I also changed oil more often that Honda recommends. Again convenience. They say 12,000 km and I do it every 10,000 on the zeros. No need to keep track of mileage that way. Matter of fact, the first year with the VFR I did it every 5K km. But that was just wasting my money that often. Then again, that VFR is sitting in my garage with just shy of 227,000 km on the clock, and when it is running, purrs like a kitten. I presently have electrical problems. Probably another stator. I will get to that soon.

Funny. I was going to suggest you come over for a beer and sandwich allowing for me to repay your info. You are most welcome here. And the beer is always cold. Both baby beer and the real stuff. Me and four others whose roots are in VFRW rode through Nakusp second weekend in September on a four-day tour. An annual ride not necessarily same location every year.
