Was thinking I should get a lift table and stereo system for that storage unit that has electricity. I actually prefer to work on my bikes here at the house but this would give me more options. :)

The deed has been done. ;)

All assembled but have to come back and tighten a few nuts with my impact wrench before using.

It really won't take up any more space because I envision always having one bike on it.

9 months after I started this thread and thus far I've not made any progress yet on setting something up here on my property to store my bikes.

My 2 biggest storage units are pre-paid through December so I feel like I only have 4 more months to get it done before I start bleeding cash again. Something I don't want.

This may sound crazy but tonight I am seriously considering bringing some INTO MY HOME, somehow!

These would only be complete ride-able examples. "Project bikes" would go elsewhere on the property and maybe some in a smaller more affordable storage unit.

Anyway......just thinking out loud for the moment but will also be rolling up my sleeves soon to make some changes.

Can you imagine having maybe 5 or 7 bikes inside your home?

    I'm single so that's gotta help...... :)

Sure, why stop at 5 or 7?

As long as you plan on remaining single. I'm not sure I could get that over the line with the High Commander of our household ; I have managed to creep up to 5 bikes now but they are mostly out of Her sight...

    Copy that, Terry.

Had a guy share with me the other day his wife wouldn't even allow him to own a motorcycle because they are so dangerous......can you imagine? YIKES....run Forrest run!

The problem here is my house sits up high on a dune ridge so it's not like I can roll anything right through the front door.

You could however go around to the back of my house....after navigating uphill a ways. And I have a nice long covered patio back there. That may be where they end up. Maybe move one of my lift tables back there. Lot of work moving stuff around but we'll be coming into some cooler and drier weather so that will help.

My Mancave is around the back of my house, under an extension that we built to create a family room (ha! we're empty nesters now!). I have to take the panniers off the ST1300 to get between the house and the boundary fence. I had a concrete path installed so aside from narrowness, it is easy enough.

Whatever you do, you need to make it convenient and not a chore to get to. You also need to keep a close eye on the entry of salt spray corrosion based on your description.

with the race car having to go inside, I am debating whether to build a 8x12 shed for the bikes or rent an 10 x 20 in town for the car and just keep the bikes in the garage still? I can do the shed I think for about a grand, the unit in town is $100 a month!

All good points to consider. Thank you, Terry.

I visited our city's building dept. today and got the information I needed for planning purposes. What is allowable by code. So I have some calculations & measurements to do.....but am liking more and more the idea of utilizing what I already have under canopy.

The rear of my house where the covered patio is faces west away from the ocean so that makes a huge difference wrt any salt spray. I can also see myself enclosing this patio area one day and adding climate control. The problem is my outside AC condenser unit is located there so it requires ventilation.

    $100/month for a 10x20 is a very good value.

I just made the decision to sell a car I have had in one of my storage units and free up some space. I have another one I think I will be selling as well. Time to get serious about downsizing!

My collection grew at a ridiculous rate and now it's time to right the ship.

I don't know if I am guilty of what George Carlin intimates in his quote below or I just love these bikes so much I couldn't pass up the opportunities of ownership when they presented themselves!

I do too so that's something we both have in common!

And has nothing to do with the overall theme I tried to convey in my post.

Most of the recent bikes I've bought have had a similar goal; take something quite unloved, and restore it to former glory with some sensible upgrades along the way. Much of the satisfaction comes from the getting your hands dirty and learning the ins- and outs of each model. I take great delight in hammering along on my cheapest purchases (my 97 VTR1000 cost me abouut US$1500 and my current 09 6th gen was nearly the same) and waving to people on the latest and greatest (and expensive). I can't really justify dropping $20k (or more) on the latest BMW knowing that the amount of riding pleasure won't be 10x what I get out of my 6th gen.

Buying my first "second bike" was a revalation in the freedom that it grants. No longer do you have to put something back together ASAP or there is no riding, and if you're like me, the fear of f...ing something up and needing to get adult assistance drops away.
