Another 1984 VF500F project

I can move it around now to free up some space.

 

I've never seen this before. A bit too much torque from the previous owner I suppose. Looks like I have a bit of work to do. Luckily I have spare carbs.

A little 3-1 oil and some chewing gum will fix that right up. Sorry man.

I am both lucky and surprised I never snapped one of the carburetors like that when I'd used a ratchet strap to seat the inlets in the intake boots.

 

yeah that was my biggest fear, but if you heat them up and add some lube, they go in pretty well unless they are completely beat. If they are completely beat then it is not worth the potential breakage in my mind.

I hate to admit, but I think I cracked a set before I knew better.

 

on my first vf500 rebuild, I tried to use the old boots. Even with lube it was so hard to install the carbs I felt I was going to break something. I bought new boots and it was much easier. From then on I don't even try to use old boots, I just order new ones.

My old mechanic said he wouldn't even allow the bike in the shop for service if the owner didn't bring new insulators. Probably not 100% true, but it should be. lol

 

I'm also in the club, but luckily it was repairable with JB Weld.






After that little episode I saw the light! Little pick tool to help seat the insulators plus ALWAYS use brand new insulators!

Red Rubber Grease. Good man.

But that damage is a different club. That's from corrosion, right?

That carb "repair" would make me nervous. If/when it crumbles... right in to the valves and rings/pistons.

 

I learned from you to use new insulators, use red rubber grease, and the pick tool. Prior to that - oh man - a freaking frustrating nightmare beyond proper descriptive terms!

BTW - you have to wonder why this kind of stuff is not in the FSM....nor any other reference books. Mind boggling!

As far as that repair.....guess I am willing to take the chance. I was very careful with the prep work so have that going for me plus that area isn't stressed much.

 

Got it. The reason that shit is not in the FSM is that if your aren't dealing with 30-40+ year old insulators technique really isn't a thing. They fucking pull out and "pop" in. But I will say the 1st Gen carbs have a narrower final angle that is more challenging even with new parts. 2nd are better for sure, 3rd and 4th almost fall in.

"stressed" has a few meanings. Heat cycles while being clamped is one of them. A carb body that I likely have for the cost of shipping is pretty cheap insurance.
