    how many miles on ride

I have been debating on wether to use auto oil or stick with moto oil. I have been doing research for about a year and a half on all the pros and cons, then I ran up on a post of this guy had a cbr 900, the first day he got it, he put regular castrol auto oil in it, ran up to 100,000 miles, then raced it awhile, then at about 200,000 got him another, but still kept that one and said it still ran like the day he got it. So my mind is set, I use castrol gtx 1040 in winter and 2050 in summer, in all my bike now and cars. Hope this gives you some insight on all this ( you are only supposed to use moto oils in motorcycles) crap. Of course the dealers are going to tell you to use this, because they make money off the high price moto oils. Like I said I have done research on this, about the additives, ingredients, talking to people and conclusion is you can use automotive oil, just pick the right one.

This isn't the thread I was looking for but hell, lets kick some life into an old thread. If someone can come up with the more popular thread about high mileage, please remind us. As of today, I have 231,070 km on the clock of my 2006. That is 143,580 miles. The only major thing I have done to this bike is a clutch rebuild. The rest was regular maintenance. Oh ya. Last winter I replaced all the brake lines with braided lines only because they are old and have not failed yet. But why wait for that. It has been painted twice though. Winter riding is hard on the paint.

It is great to hear that your bike is still trucking on Randy. I bought a cheap, lightly abused 09 last year and have put 8000km on it (now to 92000km I think) and that runs very sweetly although I did put new clutch discs in as it was a bit grabby and it needed new CCTs. I've looked "inside" and the cams and bearings are like new. The only odd bit of wear on this is a loose rear calliper mount that I can feel rattling sometimes; I think the carrier plate is a little loose on the eccentric hub, it can't go anywhere but isn't "snug" like on my 99 (which has similar mileage). I've also got 136000km on my ST1300 but those are known to be un-killable. IMG_7395 (1).JPG

Oh, 6000km ride on a 2000 VFR. I'm walking around bow-legged now and my right hand will never be the same.

When I retired for the second time, I rode my 06 for 5 weeks and 8,000 miles, down into Ca and around southern Cali, into Arizona, up through Utha , into Colorado then got lost for a day or so, and a couple days later ended up in Winnipeg then eventually back home on Canada's west coast. What a trip. Would love to do it again but I think at my age, that ship has sailed.

That's some major KM happening there. Have you had to do any substantial servicing on that bike. Did you buy it new and put all of them on yourself? I was by your hometown about 1 1/2 months ago. I waved but you ignored me. LOL

I was gone, gone, gone, I was gone so long.....for sure. I had been on a few rides down south prior to this but this time, I was in no hurry to get back as there was no work for me anymore. I have done a few longish rides since as well down to Cabo San Lucas and up to Fairbanks Alaska and back too. But those last two were on my Africa Twin. I just got back from a one month, about 7,000km trip to and around Winnipeg and Saskatoon and home. Rode through a few rain storms and one wicked rain, hail, lightning, and wind storm coming into Calgary. I had no choice there. There was no place to take shelter between Drumheller and Calgary. Got home yesterday. I did remember to phone my wife and wish her a Happy Anniversary though.

As a side question, where do you guys stay when you travel a lot? i'd liek to, but $200/night hotels are pretty prohibitive.

A mixture of friends, family and motels. I usually stay at the old ma and pa motels. Not always the fanciest motels but all I am looking for is a place free of filth and bed bugs. There are times I stay at a higher class place, usually when I am traveling long and hard and I was a place to put my head down...like....3 hours ago.

Before you spend money on anything about your trip, including your bike, you must sit down and look at a loose budget for the trip. If you can't afford the budget you came up with, accounting for unexpected issues, and where you were sleeping and eating, then you need to really re-consider your trip. Maybe a little fewer trips might be a short term plan to deal with the lack of finances. Don't stop riding, just budget and maybe cut out the more frivolous trips and focus on the rides that are more important to you. There are many riding experiences I wished I could partake in, but you can't go to them all. The ones I did go on, were worth the cost of the trip and I have no regrets that way. I have met a ton of very good people as a result.

Do they have Youth Hostels or YMCA hostels down there? They are usually quite cheap and very basic. You usually have a dorm with three or four roomies, sometimes more. ANd they are very basic. You usually gather your bedding from the receptionist when you book in. They are clean and very simple. Often no AC so there is that. Travelling students an adventurers often use them. People of all ages really but mostly students. No room service or Continental breafasts there though.

When we took longer trips years ago mostly stayed in our tent or with acquaintances, even a decade ago prices were too high(motels). Since fuel has nearly doubled in cost the travelling is severely reduced , 100 km is a long ride these days & even that might only happen once a fortnight, plus sitting on the bike for more than 1 hr isn’t the pleasure it once was. Still get in 3-5 shorter pilgrimages a week tho, hopefully that’ll not change anytime soon

My 4 week, 7,000km ride very recently came in a lot less than I thought it would. With all the riding I did, the few cheap motels I stayed in going, gas and meals travelling to and from my destination, I think I came in less than 2 grand. I was expecting to pay more. I have stayed at a few Super 8 or Circle 6 motels. They are relatively cheap. Especially Circle 6 and are clean. But I have stayed in cheaper places that were less decked out but still clean.

I've stayed with friends at a ma and pa place in Wilbur Washington. It was one of those clean but old places. As each one of use were crossing the border into the USA one time, the agents manning the two open kiosks both asked "WHERE THE HELL IS WILBUR?" I couldn't tell him because I had no idea where it is. I just told him I was "following that guy up ahead."
