I have a 2008 VFR800 that I laid down a few years ago and I have ordered a replacement crankcase cover to swap with the one that got scraped up.

I have the official Honda service manual for this bike. However this manual does not list torque specs for the crank case cover. I spoke to several service departments at three or four local Honda motorcycle dealerships and they use the same manual. They didn't have an answer.

I called a local motorcycle shop that repairs most motorcycles and they said they torque to 7 ft/lbs. or 84 inch/lbs. Another guy said to use .5 ft/lbs or 6 inch/lbs.

Additionally those of you who have removed the crankcase cover did you use an OEM gasket or a high temp silicone sealer or both? I am getting conflicting information on this as well.

So what torque specs for the cover and should I use the gasket or silicone sealer?

    It's usually 7ft/lbs

Most Honda Service Manuals Service have a general torque section for the different size bolt diameters when a specific torque application is not specified in the appropriate section.

I typically use OEM gaskets if available, but have had zero issues with Caltric off eBay.

Typically clean and dry with perhaps a little Hondabond around any rubber wire grommets if present. If some gasket scraping got away from you and the surface has been marred, maybe a slight smear there.

The bolts on the crankcase cover are 6mm. I went back to the service manual to the General Information section. I finally found what I was looking for which is more confusing. Can someone decipher this?

Likely the first one in your red section.

6mm shaft, small flange, 8mm wrench
    7ft/lbs

Agree with Captain - the bolts are small flange, 8mm hex... go 7 ft-lbs.... interesting the stator cover lists 9 ft-lbs...

The stator cover might have large flange?

Thanks guys. The parts that are on order should ship on 10/23. I hope to get the by Monday. The two cracks on the lens are circled and when it rains water leaks in. The scrapped up cover speaks for itself.

I recall the service manual for my 2014 Honda Accord that I felt was more detailed than the one for the Honda VFR 2002 - 2008.

I have that OEM manual...25 chapters not enough?.... I think its more of a matter of learning your way around it. As with most Honda Factory manuals, there is an assumption of you have mechanix skillz in the first place....

Honda has what is called a Common Service Manual that bridges the gap between good mechanical skills and model specific info. Basically a general guide to how Honda Motorcycles are serviced.

From what one of the service tech at Ron Ayers told me is they already know what torque specs to apply because the are pretty much the same across many models. Such as the torque specs for the crankcase cover, the torque specs are nearly the same from sport bike, cruisers, touring, to dirt.

I know for a fact that the torque value for the 2014 Accord valve cover is 9 ft/lbs. When I had the manual I looked it up. The leaky valve cover was repaired under warranty. That's when I thought the torque value for the crank case c0ver might be the same, the Ron Ayers service tech said that is a huge coincidence.

They're enough but some manuals are better organized than others. I can assure you the 2014 Honda Accord Service manual is better organized and easier to understand than the 2002 - 2008 VFR/A manual.

I can understand if you are modifying the bike then you'll be familiar with the manual and the bike both will be second nature. Honda motorcycles are bullet proof and unless you totally abuse it you may not need to make repairs.

My 2008 is bone stock until I replace the lens and crank case cover...

in actual practice, nobody uses a torque wrench for small bolts; instead, one uses an educated wrist and a feel for it based upon experience.

Agree to a point, wrenching 40+ yrs...but I do both depending on how critical it is...I have a low range torque wrench for that purpose...
