OK - things are looking VERY good with Bazza's storage unit move. Last night I was thinking about that rear tire - and that I still haven't found my tire irons - so I started thinking about that BLACK wheel and since I was "starting over" anyway - why not switch back to the factory WHITE version. And that I actually have a stash of wheels with tires still on them. So this morning I went over - and as I was hoping to - found a nice looking WHITE wheel with a tire already installed, so assuming it would hold air OK, I would at least be able to finish the job and get that bike moved. I aired her up and despite a 2006 tire code (!) it held just fine. Swapped over the rear sprocket and brake rotor and wheeled her over to the bike.

I moved the other RC24 over - and then headed back home to cool off. I was undecided whether to return tonight but ultimately decided I better try to get a few more things done - and maybe even finish re-installing that rear wheel.

So that's what I did and holy cow......it only took me about 1/2 hour to get the wheel back on....using the technique of getting the axle in one side first and then the other....stoked! So I was able to move that bike over and now they are ALL moved! I still have some oil stains to clean up tomorrow and a couple more items to move but no biggie....less than 1 hour's work.

Gotta say - that WHITE wheel looks much better on the bike than that BLACK one did!

When I was moving my bikes this week, the usually very dependable '86 VF500F started - but wouldn't take any throttle. Furthermore, fuel was coming out of the petcock exterior where the handle/lever/switch is. I didn't have time to investigate then, but made a point when I was over there tonight to remove the tank and take a look.

The hoses look OK so I'm thinking it could be the petcock. I brought it home tonight and will check out tomorrow.

I remember the seller telling me it was from a different brand bike because he couldn't get an original. Said this was the only one he could find that would fit.

This is also the tank he fabbed up a new interior made of diamond plate and left the exterior original. Capacity is less but I guess I won't have any corrosion issues with the insides.

I also plan to hook up a fuel bottle to the bike separate from messing with the petcock just to confirm it runs OK.

Will post any updates.

OK, petcock removed. Before doing anything else. I'm going to try and find a new o-ring for it. I think I have some of these in my fuel line/petcock box.

Fuel leaking out of the handle - it seems this (being a wear item) would be the first item to check.

 

No luck on the o-ring. Had two but they were a tad too large plus didn't have the dividers.

Going to try some kind of fuel resistant sealant.

I can pick up some Permatex Orange fuel resistant gasket sealant locally (Auto Zone) so will probably go that route.

 

It will not last. And will slowly weep/leak fuel when you don't know and ruin everything below it.

"Fuel resistant" is not "Fuel proof". It will fail and you will cry.

You have to find an o-ring. Are the dividers necessary?

 

Don't know if they are or not. I've never had to do this kind of thing, so just shooting from the hip right now.

I do intend to keep searching for the right o-ring. But hoping this sealant will at least confirm the seal is the problem. Which it sure seems to be, from my uneducated perspective.

 

I believe the dividers prevent fuel from entering the cavity where the mounting screws go

Then I would find an o-ring that is the right length to fill the inner square "track" of dividers and outside perimeter. You can use some HondaBond around the bolt holes to keep moisture and corrosion out.

Also, if you did a preimeter oring with out the dividers, you should then be able able to use copper or aluminum crush washers on the fastener heads to seal.

I have a petcock coming tomorrow that has an o-ring that might be the same specs as mine, so going to wait until it arrives to see if that works.

Will update with results.....

 

Petcock and sealant arrived today and the o-ring was a perfect fit!

Just finished putting everything together but the smaller of the two fasteners (torx head) isn't allowing me to tighten - in other words it's stripped. Probably on the tank end. It's a M6 1.0. The other phillips head fastener screwed down nice and tight and is a 1/4".

I'm not happy because I know there's no sense in going any further until I put a different fastener in where it's stripped...so I will pull it all back off before the sealant cures any further.

 

Be nice if I had two studs to slide the petcock onto - and then tighten down with a pair of nuts. Even when I tap new threads in - I just don't like the idea of how thin & soft the aluminum is it's bolted into.

Guess I'll try it with new threads first and down the road can modify if needed.

 

Why not run a bolt though it and put a nut with a lock washer on the outside?
