Seems like that might work, as long as I could tighten the nut down sufficiently without the bolt turning on me.

Also, how do I get the bolt to stay in place while I insert the petcock? Pair of those narrow vice grips?

 

Maybe a little JB weld tank weld to hold the bolt long enough to tighten down the nut.
I know it’s a MacGyver thing but just a thought.

Thanks, @sixdog - I think I will try to re-thread the hole first and see how that works. I wonder if the seller went through this as well and that's how I ended up with 2 dif. size fasteners!

I vote. JB metal fuel tank + a 10mm hex head inside the tank. Let it cure 24hrs and then torque carefully when reinstalling. Might be your best bet if the threads are not repairable. That plus your new oring and you could be off to the races.

I would tighten the bolt into place so it cures flush inside. Tricky one, this is.

 

Thanks, @RogueRC24 - will make a decision after trying to re-thread the hole.

Wondering now if this stripped thread was the real culprit in my leak. I didn't notice anything being loose when I removed the petcock but the way it is a bit tightly inserted into that hole may have masked any looseness.

 

Morning all!

OK the deed has been done. Ended up using a 1/4" ss machine screw I had in my boat fasteners box. Was able to put a good degree of mustard on the torque by hand, so hoping this will do it.

If not we'll re-think.

Didn't even need to do any drilling before tapping - just went right in. Soft!

I'm giving it 24 hours to set up before testing, so will report back tomorrow on results.
