My 86 is coming along nicely.

    Tank is clean and ready.
Carbs were completely disassembled, gone through and rebuilt. I also went with new #40 pilot jets.
New fuel filter, fuel lines, fuel pump, and petcock.
Front brake master cylinder rebuilt. Both front calipers completely rebuilt including new pistons (weren't needed but replaced anyway).
Rear master cylinder rebuilt. Rear caliper rebuilt including new pistons (old ones were still usable but went with new)
New EBC sintered pads front and rear
New HEL SS lines front and rear, finished in carbon fiber color.

This coming week I'll be rebuilding the clutch master cylinder, as well as the slave cylinder. A new HEL SS line for that as well.

All rebuild kits were from Brakemasters. I got to tell you; they make some quality stuff.

I still have to perform a coolant flush, install a new thermostat, install new spark plugs, and do an oil change. Then on to a fork rebuild and finally install new tires. Hoping to be finished in a few more weeks. I'll add some pics to my previous thread when I get a little more time to play around on the computer.

I found and purchased (2) new Tour Max Mitsubishi fuel pumps for a ZX Ninja and made the modifications that Joe Nelson suggests. It worked out well and fits in the 86 nicely. I got one for the 87 as well because I know it's only a matter of time before that original one takes a dump. Better to have it ready to go if and when.

The 86 is coming along nicely. It's been stored indoors its entire life. So that has helped with not having to deal with rust or degradation on bolts or mated parts. It's been an enjoyable process so far. I'm looking forward to having it back in top form again.

OK thanks, Brian. I found Joe's blog post/tutorial. I had forgotten about it!

That's nice your bike has been so well kept! I've obtained quite a few that had sat - but were "well preserved" - and it makes a HUGE difference in how your feel about the restoration work.

Updating......I had posted in the Random Pics thread - after a ridiculously hot summer, I finally decided to get back on this project, starting with a thorough cleaning, which I did today.

Although the bike looks pretty good overall, I have to follow the usual protocol when starting up a bike that has sat for a while.

So the next step is to turn the engine over by hand. Before doing so, the plugs need to come out and the cylinders lubricated through the spark plug holes with a little Marvel Mystery Oil.

I got all that done as the sun went down so she'll sit overnight with the MMO soaking in and in the morning I will turn the engine over. I don't expect any surprises but feel it's important to do this before investing any more time.

I have a carb set I will be rebuilding for the bike and will work on that this week. I also have all the brake calipers & both masters now removed so can move forward with those at some point soon, I hope...along with the clutch slave.

The tires will need to be replaced and I already have new tires so guess I will do that after I get the engine running and before I replace the brake calipers in front.

What do you guys think about these plugs that came out of her? They look good to me and I plan to lightly clean them off and re-use.

The plug boots came off very nicely too - no breaks or tears, thankfully.

Here's a before and after of the cleaning and a pic of the plugs:

Those plugs look good. Plus you want to run those on a long term sitting +MMO startup anyway. New plugs later as needed.

Engine turned over by hand smooth as silk this morning.

I also found the carbs that came with this bike that I had already gone through (everything inside the bowls) - except the fuel tubes/o-rings, so will go ahead and do those now so that should get me to being able to start her up. Stay tuned, it will be another day at least.

Getting one of these iconic machines back going again is a real privilege.....feels good.....

The spark plug cleaning turned out great...but I wonder if I ruined them by removing the white coating on the electrode.

    I may be stupid...but I'm not crazy!

I just installed a brand new set...not worth taking any chances with such a great bike.

Now to work on those carbs.... :)

Yeah, those original plugs didn't need anything but re-installing. But the good news is you are very, very unlikely to foul NGK DPR8EA-9s

So even with the "white" removed...those can be used again?

The white was glazed ceramic insulator. They are likely still ok seeing as "Spark Plug Cleaners" are essentially little sand blasters.
