I ride a '99 vfr 800 and I am a little dissapointed in the HP.
My last bikes were: cbr929, cbrxx1100, and zx11.
I have put a slipon and K&N filter.
It just runs out of steam trying to get to 150mph. It will do it, but really has to work hard.
Other than that i love it.
Question: how fast are the newer bikes?
I would love more top end something ike 165 or 170

5th and 6th gen bikes have about the same hp/weight ratio, don't look for any more top end there.

My recommendation would be to get a 'Busa.

Druggie....it looks like you might have bought the wrong bike....or sold the wrong one for that matter. The VFR might not be the bike for you if you are looking for big top end speed. As PC mentioned, I would get a 'busa.

The newer 6th gen bikes are pretty close to the same top end/speed. 5 gen are a little lighter I believe. Same horsepower pretty much as well. Pretty hard to push a bike that weighs this much and only 100 horses past 145-150.

I've had my 6th Gen for two weeks now. It goes alot faster than I'll ever need, but I will concede that its no top end missile, especially compared to the Blackbird, 929 and ZX-11. Its got great mid range though and handles like a dream, plus its a really good looking bike. Not to mention, I rode about 200 miles on Saturday without flinching. I am sold on it.

And that's approx. 100HP AT THE CRANK! Which I know is very much exaggerated....... I'm thinking wheelie bars might help your top speed........

5th gen VFR, the 6th gen VFR isnt any faster than the 5th gen VFR, and the
6th gen VFR isnt any faster than the 5th gen VFR. Whew, I finally feel we've answered his question!

Dude, Its time you found a mountain and learn how to turn. Although there are a few 140-160 mph sets of sharp corners on my ride I just cant master. I think it is lack of speed.

Look where he lives, Texas. Unless he lives north of San Antonio, high speed thrills is about all there is. My toy while living in Texas for 5 years was a 1968 Chevelle - that got sold for a bike within the first year after moving to Colorado.

Never been there I guess we are spoiled in CA. I don't even know of a road long and safe enough to go that fast unless you hit the freeway and that is dumb.

Id have to agree. Sounds like you bought the wrong bike. I didnt buy a VFR for top end speed. I bought it as a "Sport Touring" bike. Something i could cruise on comfortably, still have some speed, and in my opinion looks better than most of the others.

Id like to take this opportunity to formally announce once and for all the VFR may or may not be a really fast bike, furthermore, it stands to reason that the possibility exists for a chance of heightened acceleration due to various powertrain modifications, however such mods will at best herald the addition of minor horsepower gains and at worst alter your motorbicycle from a tamed but still gluttonous fuel ingesting swine, to an all out benzine-burner. I would like to conclude with the statement that this particular model of motorbicycle is best suited to the gentleman/lady who prefers a quick zip on the track from time to time or perhaps a long picnic of a day at your local curved thoroughfare, with the occasional epic journey added for spice and a mildly sore buttocks. All of that being said, I feel as though future generations will reflect on the VFR as something of a renaisance bike, able to appease the adrenaline addicted amongst us as well as satiate the appetites of those who would cherish naught but a calm cruise on a warm summers day.

    zoom zoom.

However, if you slap a supercharger on it, I am sure it will do 170, for about 4000 miles. then eat itself.

That depends on how fast your corner exit speed is. Throttle Jockeys need not apply.

I know of one place near here but it's over near carizzo plains which is pretty desolate. I usually get up to 100ish then back off again. High speed straights just don't do anything for me.

oh, yeah, back to topic.... To the OP: probably if you like the VFR but want faster, read about the XX in posts from SLOav8r. You might could change your sprockets and go a little faster on top. Of course it might make taking off a PIA.

After college I soon left the superbike scene and quickly enlisted in the VFR ranks...Makes for a more comfortable ride and I have finally learned there is more to speed than big brass balls...Its amazing how leaning into a curve at 70 is just as, if not more, entertaining than hitting 155 on my old CBR...Yes, the little 600's will make you look bad, Yes it wont wheelie in 3rd, and Yes it weighs about 80-100 lbs to much...But, I can ride it for a easy 75 miles before I even think about stretching out, a feat accomplished in only 30 miles on my superbike....One thing I have noticed though...VFR owners tend to be a older, more reserved crowd, more about twisties and genuine fun, than the speed demon, unskilled, try to wheelie and cause two other people to crash younger riders...While we never grow up, our riding style does....Accept the fact we cant outrun the busa's in life, but merely get there with more style and comfort....
