Fuel gauge erratic

My fuel gauge is sloshing around going up and down at will.

I have done this repair on an old Merkur xr4ti and it was a failing diode in the cluster...would it be the same thing?

Its on my 1991 vfr750f

Most common is the plug from the sending unit has come loose. I would check that first.

 

Where is that under the tank I guess? Or under the gauge itself

 

Just behind the tank under the seat, a red plug I think.
