i started it with choke...it started right up..ran for like 30 seconds...me waiting for it to get flowin......and i went to rev it a bit...and it started acting up.....like it was running ..idling alright till i put any throttle ..then..it would bog..and die.....it started one more time....we bit of trouble getting throttle up and rpms and reved high to "clear throat?" ...was revving fine...then let it down again...and it died....i think i got it started one more time...then....it started....ran ..low idle..no hand on throttle...the as soon as i tried to throttle.....would and did die..and think that was it...it did not start again.... this bike has run top notch all last summer 7800 miles worth and ran great this summer..several rides i haven't been able to ride much this year There is a makeshift wire on the choke to pull it shut after its warmed up....and i think the carb and choke system needs to be gone thru.......but still...like i said ...has ran great for a long time..and i use the choke in the past too. I'm a shadetree mechanic and actually pretty good...but long stretches between jobs leaves at a loss still even with little things...especially if you're not fixing things on a regular basis. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Welcome aboard. Being a pretty good shadetree i'll bet you can pull those carbs and clean em up to run as good as new--just don't loosen the carbs from the metal plenum plate at the bottom of the air box. i'm guessing that there is dirt and sludge in the bowls clogging the pilot jets and possibly the choke jets. Take a look at this pictorial: http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/22449-cleaning-carbs.html?highlight=cleaning+carbs
Symptoms suggest possible water in the fuel, so try flushing tank and draining float bowls. If you always park outdoors, rain might have infiltrated around the fuel filler cap.
Thanks again for all your input. Fortunately it was a hiccup. I tried to start it two days ago just to see and it did not start, then tonight again just in case and it started (thank god). Then ran it around town about 50 miles worth and like nothing happened.
