Starter problems

    So yesterday i was trying to start my 83 750 and nothing would happen so I went and ate dinner came back and it started right away and about 1 min latter there was a noise so I turn the kill switch off and found it was my starter spinning with even the kill switch off and the key turned off thank god I have a bad battery and was able to just discont the jumper cables from my truck and it stopped but now every time I try to jump it the starter just goes crazy any ideas

    Not that many possibilities really. There's the starter switch, the relay, and the solenoid. One of them has a problem. Not likely the starter switch (the button on the handlebar), so I'd start by disconnecting the relay from the solenoid. Apply power. If the starter spins the solenoid is at fault, and if not it's probably the starter relay. Should be a ten minute thing. The starter relay is underneath the right side cover. If memory serves it's plugged into a receptacle, so you could just unplug it.

    Thanks for in insight. But I went back at it tonight and it stopped droning it but I think I wanna replace the relay but I can't find it

    The starter switch on the first two gens was a bit of a pile of junk. The hinge breaks off and the connectors get all goofed up and short oot. The good news is a gen 3 or newer switch gear is a direct bolt on part and a much better part. Run a gen 5 switch gear on my gen 2.
