Is it wise to do this with the bike on the center stand? I think the manual says, do with both wheels on the ground!

Then why would you do it otherwise ? Adjusting things "another way" may be adjusting things "the wrong way" ...

most important thing is to find and mark the tightest spot along the chain run as you turn rear wheel (bike up, obviously), then set back on the ground and adjust for proper tension at the spot you marked. on a worn chain, some spots may be loose and some tight, but make sure the tension is set for the tightest spot. if you set at loosest spot, you can damage the chain and possibly the trans output shaft outer bearing.

I wonder why they only say do it with wheels on the ground? Aside from certain US models, VFR's have centerstands that make this job much easier. For the record, I've been a doofus as I didn't read my owner's manual properly when adjusting mine. I'll be curious to re-check my bike to see the difference, if any.

Then you may want to apply for a job as technical writer at Honda's, and start rewriting that part ? Just one difference : on the center stand, the wheel is hanging. On the side stand, the wheel is weight-charged and hence pressed upon by the bike's weight. Say, rough estimate, some 10 degrees of difference in the angle between the chassis and the swingarm. Not much of a difference, I agree, but a difference.

Done it. I used my manual (not the internet one). Literally, a 5 min job, easy peasy . Do it on the center stand.

I would do what Honda does with the exception that I and a lot of other people run my chain looser than what they recommend. I see no need for a tight chain. I non-scientifically think it lasts longer running it slightly loose.
