Ok, I get ya. Well the tank is 5.8 gallons. Here is what I have figured out so far. The first line of the tank gauge is useless... It seems as though when ya start up the bike and start moving it goes one line down. I also know that the flashing red actually makes up a good 20+% of your tank! When I fill up with 2 lines left or maybe close to the 1 solid line I only put in about 4.4 gallons. Once I filled up about 20km into the flashing red and it only took 4.8 gallons.

My guess is that you can add at least 20% more miles to your tank without running out. There is only one way to know for sure though...

To find out exactly haw far you might expect to go on a full tank, and mind you like what was said earlier in this forum you have to account for different riding practices, and here in the mountains, elevation, you go out with a full tank, drive it until dry, then pull out that litre or so of fuel from you back back when you run out to get to the next gas station. Before someone jumps all over me for carrying gasoline in a back pack, it's the risk you take if you really want to know.

My tank rarely get below 1/3 cause I fill up every day on the way home from work as a matter of convenience. Besides, where I live I don't pay a heafty transit tax on my fuel, but where I work, I do. Ride on bruthas ride on.:vtr2:

I had the bike looked at. They told me it was running very rich b/c I had blocked the PAIR valve. I unblocked it and we'll see where it goes.

I do around 36-38 mpg also, that would be around 200 + miles per tank. I dont have to stop as often as my riding buddies to refuel, that's what I like more about the VFR.

Ohh I forgot to mention, I ride hard and fast on it. 85mph or more if the road permits, mostly straight freeways. Why TX has to be so damn BIG. yodasmile

Thanks, yeah that kinda matches what I suspected - that the fueld gauge is skewed towards the bottom end. I can fill up and if I don't really brim it when I put it on the sidestand to pay, the top bar goes out!

If Yoda is doing 36-38mpg and still getting 200 miles I need to be a bit braver with my fuel  As I get 42 pretty consistently I should be able to get the same range which would mean another day between fillups:clap2:

After reading all the posts thus far I am wondering how much if any difference the grade of gas effect the mileage, if at all, all things being equal. I only noticed one rider even mentioned grade and the obvious difference between winter and summer blends.

I gota feel for you guys, my good ole carbed machine gets no worse than 42 and thats rare, just did a brisked pace ride for half a tank and still saw 44mpg, I've also seen 55mpg but on average for me its right around 49-50mpg, and I too is a bit frisky on the throttle, yea you read that right. So, Question, Is FI all what it's cracked up to be?

I think most bikes average about 40 mpg. As far as the difference between carb and FI I think most will be right around the same. I was getting about 46mpg last week on my last tank. I think temp, terrain, altitude, and tire pressure even makes a big difference. I am ready to change maps again though since my Leo Vince's will be in next week!!! Time for some experimentation with the Power Commander.

I did a octane switch half way through and didn't see any difference worth writing home about.

Sucks huh... I will say that I am disappointed. If it wasn't for the "fun" factor mentioned above it would be going back. It's just funny that Honda went the way of TECH with the VTEC and all the emission hoopla and yet they couldn't make it better on fuel.

Still better than my cages though and a LOT more fun.

I have always wanted to get the Power Commander LCD thing where you can change maps on the fly. Would be cool to have a "fun" map and a "economy" map. Wonder if it's possible?

I think us Canadians are getting worse mileage overall than most of you down south....

This thread is interesting. My FZ-1 averages 40 despite 200 more cc's than the VFR. On the other hand, my bike is bone stock and Yamaha's factory tuning on the Fazer is notoriously lean. I need a PCIII badly. It'll also dump 10mpg by the roadside when my inner squid comes out. Being a Yamaha (power band begins somewhere around cruising altitude of the SR-71) I end up using 1-2-3 almost all the time for short blasts around the back roads near where I live. Short trip at high revs = no mileage.

Mine averages between 30mpg & 38mpg with all the mods I've done. I do like to play in the VTEC a lot also! Sometimes my front wheel comes off the ground for some reason occasionally, once a day or more!:tongue:

Nope. As I said before, I am very disappointed with the VTEC. I thought the whole 2/4 vlavle thing was all about efficiency but it seems it's more about emissions and weirdly, lower emissions seems to mean higher MPG. Beats me why that is, I have seen an increase in consumption of 20% changing from a Pre-VTEC to a 6th gen VTEC.

My commute: 46 miles roundtrip, 75 percent highway, consistently 48 mpg.

You can switch back and forth from a richer map to a more economical map. The 0 map and the 1 map on the PC are pretty lean. I don't know if I am disappointed about gas mileage around 40mpg. My bike is a toy and I really don't think about it too much. It was never really meant to be practical, its just a side benefit that it does get decent mileage. I get over 200 miles to a tank and its definitely more fun than a cage. The thing to remember is that all bikes are getting hit with stricter emissions and Euro emissions are getting even more strict in the near future. You bet the manufacturers are watching that closely. The cats are getting so big the cans are going back on the side of the bike now...... maybe under the seat wasn't such a bad idea after all!!!

I think I would like to play with the map selector option. Maybe a Super Sport mode could be added to kill what mileage I have left...

I would be happy with 40 if I could get there. I would be satisfied with 45 and not look back. As of now I'm only getting 35. I plan on trying a few tricks to see what I can do as soon as summer comes... :rain: It sure is fun and an absolute pleasure to ride so it's not that bad.

In Turkey, with stock everything and on 95 octane gas, I am only getting 32 MPG :(
The bike is 2008, bought new last year, and it's in good shape, now has 16,000KM on it.
The air filter has been checked, and the tires are good and inflated to the specs.
I rarely have VTEC on, and I try to be mellow on the bike -- except when there is an annoying car in front :)

I don't know why my gas mileage is so lousy or what else to check.. :bs:
    Help!

Guys; This is just a general comment concerning gas mileage. I believe I am correct in saying this most of the pump gas that we buy in the states is spiked with ethanol.
Ethanol is like alcohol and when used in an internal combustion engine it's tendencies are to run clean. If one would use higher percentages of ethanol they would have to jet their engine richer to take advantage of it. If I am correct the blend of gas that us stateside guys get 90% gas/ 10% ethanol does not allow us to get as good of mileage if we were to use 100% gas. So I believe all of our gas mileage figures would be a few MPG higher with good old fashioned un-cut fuel. If anyone has proffessional knowledge of this please double check that my theory holds water. tks eddie
