Well i picked up my 08 yesterday and its got 75 miles. I rode it home from work this morning, tires are broken in to within a half inch of the edge and Ive had a few brief accel's into the Vtec WOT.( I break my bikes in med. to hard). I have to say I really like it even more than I thought I would. 1st off: I know Im coming off a ZX10 so power is easier for me. 2nd theres nothing to fear from the Vtec and its smooth in my opinion. I like when it kicks in. I got a kick out of it The first time I heard the change in engine and exhuast sound. At WOT in the Vtec that thing doesnt even compare to the power Ive put down at full lean on the ZX10. 3rd I can understand why it would be unerving to a newer rider, but Im not sure this bike should really be a new rider bike if they are intimidated by power. When I was a new rider I would have loved it. I would be telling crotch rocket riders" Just wait till my VTEC kicks in! Then youll see!". Anyway its a blast for me and I wouldnt mind seeing a little more out of it really, its quite nice coming out of a turn when it kicks in! ZOOM. FINAL WORD: THIS BIKE IS BY NO MEANS DEAD.:flypig:

    Well, here is what happened.

I ended up going back a week later and driving an 08 K1200S. Fell in love with the bike immediately.

However, I wasn't in the market for a 20,000 motorcycle.

So, I found an 06 with ABS and 678 miles on it for 12k.

    Bought it on the spot.

AND.....it's the exact same color as this one....the blue with the white checkerboard pattern.

I pick it up next tuesday.

Sold the VFR for 5400 in less than 24 hours.

    HA!

Of course, you can take my comment out of context and make fun of me, but when you roll throttle on and get LLLLLLAAAAAAGGGGGG, back off the throttle, roll it on again and get LLLLLAAAAGGG, and are going "WTF is up with this"?? and then the bike surges forward unexpectedly, it shocks you. Almost getting thrown off the bike is a bit of HYPERBOLE (look it up).

And it seems like there are 2 kinds of posters here....ones that respond honestly and give credit to other bikes, and elitist goons who can't do anything but degrade other guys and other machines to make themselves feel better.:bs:

We know which type you are from your post. Some of us gave that up in grade school.

I'm getting rid of the VFR too. Too many elitists. Worse than BMWers.

Just bought a 2004 (Saturday) and it's a bit depressing to read all of this. I drove it home a long way and had an opportunity to at least play with the VTEC feature when I overtook other vehicles (or just for fun). Seems to me that as you get to know the bike you learn how to manage engine speed for whatever your needs are. That said I have yet to do any aggressive cornering where you might go between 2 and 4 valves.

It was my understanding that the purpose of the VTEC system was to improve low-end torque -- does anyone know whether there has been an improvement from the 5th Gen bikes in that regard? I'm coming off a Moto Guzzi V11 Sport so it's a bit unfair to compare the two at the bottom of the rev range -- obviously that is Big Twin territory.

The VTEC was developed for the VFR to improve fuel efficiency while maintaining HP at higher RPMs.

I do not find the transition from 2 to 4 valves that intrusive however this can be smoothed out by eliminating the O2 sensor and installing a PCIII (in conjunction with new cans)

Personally I really like riding a 6-gen but everyone has their own opinions, needs, desires, pleasures etc etc.

Did you make this up just to start another vtec bashing thread? :smile:Only kidding but I am still amazed at how people find the vtec transition at 6400 rpm so strong its alarming!!! It pulls a little harder but its really more noise and the throttle response is actually smoother up there. I have to admit that in stock form the VFR has a twitchy throttle but just about EVERY new bike has that now since they all had to meet Euro 3. Even my past CBRs had a kick at high rpm that got your attention and the throttle had some on/off qualities. What other kinds of bikes have you ridden? Have you ridden a new liter bike, you'll be absolutely terrified!!!:ncb: Go play with a ZX-14 for a while.... Thats a high side world record waiting to happen if the vtec transition is too abrupt. Anyway I do agree that a K1200s is a great bike and something I would consider owning down the road. I wouldn't mind an R1200s either. I've been on one with a pipe and it had the 190 rear tire option with OHLINS shock. Nice option and it will be better for speed than an F800s by far. It has more power than a VFR and pulls harder than vtec transition so hang on. I just took an F800s out this weekend with a friend of mine who picked his up this Spring. We switched for a while and he couldn't stop raving about the V4 and how smooth it is or the torque from low rpm right on up. My bike does have a PCIII and LVs running the 3 map so its not Euro 3 compliant anymore and the throttle response is rheostat smooth. I liked the lightness of the f800s and its nice and narrow in the middle. The info they put in the gauges is great too but again its stock so its obviously already down on power and I wouldn't trade for the BMW without feeling like I lost out. I'd look into a K1200s or an R1200s and look into a "rapidbike" pciii variant and an Akrapovic pipe. I hope you find a nice bike that suits your riding style.

Michael, I love this site. It has made me a better rider. It has encouraged me to ride attgat, and to do more of my own work on my bike. And it is very entertaining, though sometimes it is entertaining in the way a good religious war is entertaining. These are great bikes. No rant or rave can possibly refute what we know every time we get on one. But tucked in those wonderful, borderline psychotic rants are some real gems. When I read threads like this, all I can think is that fifth generation bike must have been one hell of a bike, because my sixth generation sure is amazing, though I am admittedly not inclined to kill anyone over it. I look inside myself and find all sorts of murderous tendencies, so it must be the bike. Right?

I read the first batch of posts, then skipped to the end, so if this thread is now "lets bash VTEC", I'll probably miss the point (but i would agree........)

    Anyway..............

Just took my 2000 VFR from Kirkland WA to Nipomo CA.
    1300 miles
    I-5
    HWY 199
    PCH
    Hwy 128
    101
    Skyline Blvd/ 1
    motoGP
    PCH
    Nipomo

    what a fun Time.
    as in FUN.

My Buddy rode my BMW k12rs. & at times I was jealous.
    Especially of the heated grips
    but that's an easy fix.
I got over 50mpg in one stretch (58+ to be precise, but all was not equal)
    he got about 42-ish.
Also jealous of the Throttle Meister.
    Ordering one tomorrow.
The Odometer turned 20,000 @ Laguna Seca.
I'm thinking this is some kind of sign - better just keep it.

I could look at a suspension upgrade, but honestly, with the sargent seat I was pretty darn comfortable.

Sorry you are leaving the VFR gen5 gang, but understand.
    I have a BMW K12rs - and I enjoy both.

Picking only one bike would be a very hard decision.

    regards,
    bob
