I want to remove the drive sprocket cover on my 01 VFR to clean all of the nasty old chin lube out. Do I have to remove the Clutch Slave Cylinder and the Speed Sensor to get te cover off or can I just leave them attached to the cover and remove the cover? Thanks, David..

Only need to take speed sensor off.

FYI, if you have any other issues/questions I'm sure the service manual can answer them. You can get a free version of the service manual at VFRD - vfrdiscussion home (Register for a free account and go to the downloads section)

If it is anything like my 96 there is a dowel pin that you need to work loose. It stumped me for days. I thought I had missed a bolt somewhere cuz the cover seemed to be on tight still after removing all the bolts. After posting on several VFR forums and looking very closely at the PDF manual (blowing it up many times in size) I realized the dowel pin was holding it. So I very carefully rocked the cover back and forth until it loosened it enough so the dowel pin let go of the cover. All that gunk built up in there from the chain had made it stick pretty well.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the repair manual, but I didn't see where it discussed removing the drive sprocket cover for cleaning. In all the pictures that I saw it looks like they have the clutch slave cylinder , speed sensor and all bolts in the sprocket cover removed to pull the sprocket cover. I was wonsering if the speed sensor and maybe the 2 main sprocket cover bolts could be removed to remove the cover with the slave cylinder attached so that I don't hve to bleed the clutch again. Thanks, David.

    Hi,
I serviced the rear transimssion of my 5th gen 1998 VFR last month and removed/disconnected nothing.
I just removed the sprocket cover.

Only pay attention, when you remount it, to put the hexagon of the sprocket bolt in the hexagon seat of speed sensor correctly. That's all.

    ciao, Luigi.

When I did my chain/sprockets this winter, I removed both the speedo sensor and the slave cylinder from the cover before beggining to chip 16k worth of chain grease from the inside of it.

It makes your life a lot easier to just remove the two screws and two (three?) bolts holding on the slave cylinder.

Here's a tip: wrap a big zip tie around the slave cylinder once you've removed it - otherwise the piston can fall out and drain the system of clutch fluid... Makes a lot of addtional work for yourself if you don't do this.
