Tires and suspension. We would all like to think we can outride even the older VFR's but it just ain't the gospel. Maybe a K&N or similar filter too.

For real performance maybe stuff one of the old 500 Honda GP two strokes in that puppy. ;)

    Thanks Badbilly..

You dont suggest a jetkit? Most import bikes were very restrictive and thin on fuel due to the epa but I wasnt sure on the VFR. If i do a hi flo filter I definitley will need one right??

I dont know the stock set up on the VFR and just dont want to make mistakes.

What do you suggest to get the best bang??

    Thank you in advance..

Added "performance" is only usable if the handling is up to the task. I would be checking out the condition of the tires on a bike of that age with that few miles. Also, the monoshocks on the 90-93's weren't all that good. Only recently did some whiz figure out how to rebuild them.

Re-jetting is fine if the rest of the bike is in great shape. Having a 91 I bought brand new and still ride is a pretty good indicator IMO.

The very first thing I would suggest is downloading the service manual and closer familiarity with the bike before worrying about how fast it will go. It will go fast enough as is, enough to induce pucker factor unless you are Carlos Checa or any of the various and sundry guys from that Hayden bunch.

you are right on. I have already ordered the tires (they were toast). I have a service manual and the shock looks fine (that can see) but i will be tearing into shortly. I am trying to build a plan on what to do. Not necessarily do it all right now.
With the stock header and catalytic converter like enclosure they flow into i wasn't sure if jetting was suggested. Honda is normally right on.. BUT like all other bikes experience owners have found things that work and keep us newbies from doing things un-necessary.
Truly the most popular airbox mods? or any other VFR specifics??

I just replaced my plugs, K&N air filter, and tweaked my suspension on my 2 month old 97 with 18k miles and noticed a nice improvement in speed and smoothness while also lowering my rpms. Next up is replacing the stretched chain and worn sprockets and see what gains I get there. Also agree that if those are the original shoes they should probably be replaced.

is their anything else? I am hearing of a snorkel removal for the airbox? I just want to buy and do the right things now. the rubber is in route. How well does dropping the countershaft sprocket work (just one less tooth)? It worked wonders on my CBR 900 and 600 back in the day.

Anything that is inherent to VFR's to do i want to do.

The very best bang for your buck IMO is to get yourself a spare regulator/rectifier and stuff it under your seat.

    LOLOLOL... That is hilarious..

I bought some Michelin Pilot race tires today. The bike is AWESOME and STICKKKKKY now.. I removed the dog eared signals and placed in the sides where they started placing them after 92. I am going to take off the plastics, clean everything (carb, filter, etc) and see what i have when i am done.. BTW i orderer pads too, they were close but might as well do it now.

After I go up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket i will let you know..

get used to riding the bike as it is for awhile before modding much or adding additional power.

the bike has plenty of useable horsepower, at least as much as anyone rational needs, why need more on a bike you haven't gotten very familiar with ????

never cheap- out on tires ; go for the BEST for your bike, not that much more expensive than cheapos and much safer, and stay with stock tire sizes.

Have you considered just selling it to someone here and using the bucks as a down payment on a Boss Hog?

Race tires on the street are not IMO, a really great idea. Then again slicks are really sticky.

No need to pull fairing parts when the carbs and airbox can be accessed by removing the tank.

Two teeth up will require a new chain too. Best IMO when new sprockets are installed is to get both along with the new chain for even wear.

no, no, billy. squirrelman may have empty peanut shells for a brain, but i believe that 2 teeh larger can be accomodated by the chain tension adjuster without need for longer chain.......i think.

    i appreciate the help guys.
speaking of getting the tank off i noticed the hinges where the tank will lift up from the front but where are the screws that holds the front of the tank down?
i have the manual but havent looked yet.

WHEN i do the rear sprocket i will advise on the chain. it seems their is room.

Coulld be on the adjuster. Maybe some of the more tech oriented guys can pitch in one that one. The stock chains of that vintage were not all that good either.

Filter changes, maintenence and replacement do not require removing the tank. Working on the carbs other than synching them might. The service manual is online as a PDF and has schematics as well as disassembly and reassembly various subsystems. In PDF form, "pages" can be blown up and printed out for reference.

Basically, many of the contributors on this site are pretty savvy about the VFRs in general. Maybe if you would prioritize your objectives the "advice" would be more specific to your needs. I have a hot-rod BMW, I not so fondly call, "The Money Pit. " Fast as hell for an airhead Beemer but unreliable.

I mean no offense to anyone on the forum. I learned a long time ago to ask the specialists questions before doing anything. I literally have had the bike for 36 hours but love to dig in and do what makes the bike its best.

I rode it a bunch today (150 miles) on the new tires and had a blast. The power curve is very broad and consistent. I can see why the cult following. I am excited to dig into the project..

My quest here was simply to start the project right.:strong:

I say the best bang for the buck, would have to be up-grading the mono-shock.
i have a fox-sox II adjustable on my 91'. great for the $$. you could get a ohlin for more $$.
    that and good tires...
