What rear tire sizes work WELL?

I know my '94 uses a 170-60-17 rear tire. Are there other tire sizes that work well, particularly for sport or occasional track riding? Does a 180-55work, assuming it's the correct type tire?

Nope!

The 170 is the best.

I have a 97 and I run a Pirelli Diablo Corsa III on the front and the regular Diablo 170 on the back. Great combination.

I used to run a 180 until fellow member, RVFR, showed me the light, so to speak.

Also Michelin Pilot Powers come in 170's too. And a good street/ track day tire.

I agree with Mr. Bubba, I ride my 92 on the track with 120F/170R and have been through 2 sets of standard diablos and love them. Will be trying a pair of Diablo Rossos next, but size wise, dont mess with it.

Get 5000 miles incl 500 on the track from a set, stay stock

 

Rick, best listen to BZ. Haven't tried the Rossos though have heard mixed reviews at the local track, all thou a track isn't necessarily the best place to tell how good a tire is it's a good place to start, I too run the Corsas with great success. so say if it ain't broke no need to fix it.

 

I always stick to stock size recommendations. But I'm the kind of guy who never fits aftermarket exhausts either, so there ya go.

 

I'm running a 180 55 17 Michelin Pilot on the rear of my 1994 VFR and performance/handling is great. I've had no worries leaning the bike so that the tire wears to within a quarter inch of the tire edge. The tire looks great, too.

 

The thing that got me started on this question was that I have a friend at work that is getting folks Pilot Power 180-55 "take-offs" that have gobs of tread left on them for $20 each. Sound like it's worth it?

 

At $20 for an excellent tire that works great, with lots of tread left, sounds like a great deal!
