    I have a 2001 Honda VFR800. It has 14000 miles on it.

How do I change my coolant? I was going to just unscrew the hose from the underside of the radiator, but I would imagine that wouldn't get all the coolant. Plus that would cause air bubble problems.

Anyone got a write-up? I don't have an owners manual, or I would have looked.

Download the service manual from here. There is a drain plug on the water pump and on one cylinder head. There are pics in the manual of plug locations.

Warning: When you first remove the drain plug from the water pump housing, the coolant will shoot a 2 foot long stream straight out of the hole.....don't get taken by surprise!

The replacement sealing washers for the drain bolts are part number 90463-ML7-000.

It is fairly simple. Just remember to check the level once or twice after refilling.
Also, air like to get stuck at the fan switch located at the top left radiator corner.
It will cause the fan not to come on. A quick turn or 2 will allow the air to escape.

Just changed mine yesterday (1998 model). The drain plug on the engine block is hardly worth bothering with. About one ounce of coolant came out when I removed it.

there is a drain bolt or plug on the water pump.It is the center bolt under the pump and hose. Make sure you replace the seal manuel says so. add 50-50 coolant let run then check level in reserve bottle good luck but its an easy thing to due..

The manual also says replace the crush washer on the oil drain bolt every time but it's nowhere near necessary.

I'm still using the original seal, just did 4th coolant/water change last week. No issues. Your call though obviously.

Luckily though, it won't do that until you crack the rad cap. I prop a dollar store rectangular container under the header at an angle to catch the stream.

I could be wrong but I think that part number is for the oil plug washer.

I am bringing back an old thread. I am draining the coolant to replace the wax sending unit. I have drained it before but not completely. I have the manual, but the photograph for the Cylinder Drain Bolt is b very poor. Be damned if I can find it. When I changed the coolant before, I just ignored that part but thought I would do it proper this time. The water pump drain plug is easy to find. It jumps put and pokes you in the eye. But finding that cylinder drain plug is a bitch. But I will find it. Mounties always get their bolt. Or is that man?

No wonder I couldn't find it. It is way hell up and behind the oil filter. I have an aftermarket oil filter on that is a bit bigger than OEM so could not see SFA while I was down on the ground looking about. I say to hell with draining that last little bit out. I am not ready for and oil change right now. Had the service manual mentioned the filter needs to be removed, I would have waited to do this wax sending unit repair until I needed to change the oil. The basterds.

Well. I hope you have better luck than I did. I wasn't just flushing the coolant, I was trying to replace the wax sending unit. I dug down deep and got the throttle body removed then saw just where that little fugger was. Decided that was as far as I was prepared to go with it. Put it back together and take it into the shop and pay to have someone with some talent did the job.

PROBLEM! Hooked a wrong tube up to the full over flow fitting. Of course I did not realize this until I put the tank back on and started bolting things down. I could smell gas but hey I was working around the gas tank anyway OK. But looked down and saw gasoline "RUNNING" down the garage floor. Kid across the street just got home from work so called him over so he could plug the fitting with his finger while I found the correct tube.

Meanwhile, I think about a gallon (Imperial gallon at that) was spilled on the floor. But I, always trying to be prepared for what may occur, have a bag of absorb all on hand. BUT! I am in the middle of revamping my shop. I have most stuff tucked away in a bunch of Rubbermaid totes. Where the fuck is the absorb all? Fortunately I had to move that stuff several time looking for my VFR manual in the last couple days. I was able to run out and find it in a minute and return to throw the stuff all over the floor.

Now. How the hell do I dispose of that absorb all? They won't take that in the domestic garbage. Guess I will have to cal the city in the morning and talk with some air head and try to find out where to take it.

God dam. I hate doing mechanical stuff.

Thanks to the kid across the street, can just see ya holding your finger on the hose yelling across the road

I was faced with where to dump the coolant at last flush. My research determined, that depending on what is in the coolant, it can be safely flushed. It wasn't hard to find on line with a google search. I had about 2 gallons left over after I fed the neighbourhood cats
