    These kind of laws remind me of a story someone wrote after World War II,(THANK YOU to all you guys who have seved our country!!):
    "In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
    And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
    And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
    And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

    Imagine:"In 2009, they came for the Harleys...". When stuff like this gets started, it never ends. I am afraid that America, Land of the Free and Home of the Brave is disappearing right before my eyes. Merry Christmas everyone. (oh yeah, in some places, they are trying to outlaw us saying that). GOD Bless.

    Right you are! Which would be worse, a few annoyingly loud pipes, or more laws, regulations, restrictions, taxes, and infringements on our freedoms? I'm sick and tired of this ever increasing Nanny State of a government we have that lusts after more and more power and control. These clowns can't even walk and chew gum at the same time. Government needs to get the hell out of our way and get back to what they do best - which is absolutely nothing!

    Mindlessly revving the engine...

    I happen to be someone who is very bothered by loud and strident noise.

    Long before I ever began riding motorcycles (BMW, Honda) I found it rather peculiar that many motorcyclists (usually but not always Harley riders) have an annoying and seemingly senseless habit of repeatedly gunning and revving their engines while sitting at stop lights, etc.

    I've always thought this to be a rather stupid and senseless habit. Aside from creating often horrendous noise pollution, it wastes fuel. In addition, might it also invite the engine to burn fuel that's too rich and therefore rather dirty or 'sooty'? Is it also an invitation to overheating? Is this good for the overall health and longevity of the engine and exhaust system?

    To compare a law against noise pollution to the attrocities commited by the Nazis is just utterly and soundly ridiculous and shows a total lack of understanding of the history of WWII. Just a real lack of respect for what the Nazis really did to people and why.

    And although some stores have said no to saying Merry Christmas to customers as a matter of policy, and some work places may make it against the rules. I haven't heard of one place in the US where it is illegal to say Merry Christmas as a private citizen (not any sort of representative of a government agency) -- a law that surely would not withstand a constitutional challenge.

    Yeah, always love it when I am in the car with a noriding friend and some idiot at a light is reving his engine up and down, and people turn to me and go "you ride, why is it that bikes have to do that at a light?"

    Do you ever get the feeling that while the ship is sinking, the politicians are worried about how much they can charge for the life jackets?

    :lol: Only in America!!! :lol:
    Sorry guys but one has got to have serious brain damage to want to pass laws like that!!!

    I mean, fining a biker for a loud exhaust? Sure.
    Taking away license et al on re-offending? You betcha.

    But confiscating the bike?!! What happens if they clock you (God forbid!) doing 130 on an empty freeway? Electric chair?

    I'd say the following pretty much sums it all up:

    Where I come from we say "Loud pipes save lives"!!! :unsure:
    And yes; the 102 db straight-through Termignoni cannons are staying on my Duc no matter what! They may not be legal but they sure as heck are Pure Sex!!! :strong:

    And did you ever notice that none of those politicians are ever on that sinking ship, despite the fact that they, through their gross incompetence, put the holes in the hull?

    I couldn't agree more! I love it when people comment on how quiet my VFR is while admiring its design/appearance. I don't have to be obnoxiously loud to get noticed...and it definitely doesn't reduce my enjoyment for riding.

    As I always say, not matter where you live, for the most part, if you piss off the wrong people, or enough people.....laws will be enacted.

    Sorry KC, but I think that self-policing the ranks is a fantasy....I wish the opposite however, it is just not possible. All it does if you suggest that somebody's bike is too loud (that you are not friend's with) is piss them, off, and they will go on doing it just to piss you and other people off because they believe it is their "RIGHT." Most times, if somebody has a bike that is obnoxiously loud, they are probably just an a-hole plain and simple, and/or have a "penis-envy" and are robably trying to compensate for their lack of manhood.

    New York City Council unfairly targets motorcycle sound

    PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The New York City Council is about to give final approval to a bill that the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) says discriminates against motorcyclists and imposes severe, out-of-line penalties.

    The AMA also complained that the measure languished in the Council for two years and then, in a surprise move, was revived just a week before the scheduled final vote, allowing little opportunity for public comment.

    "This is outrageous. This is no way to operate in a democracy," said Imre Szauter, AMA government affairs manager. "The Committee on Public Safety considered the bill on Dec. 14, 2006, and then suddenly approves it and sends it to the full Council on Dec. 10, 2008?"

    The measure, up for full City Council approval on Thursday, Dec. 18, would make it illegal for any motorcycle to be on city streets unless it has an exhaust system with a stamp that states it is approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Essentially that means the bike must have a stock exhaust system.

    Motorcyclists caught without an EPA-stamped exhaust system would face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense and temporary forfeiture of the motorcycle until the fine is paid. A second offense would result in a fine of up to $2,500 and permanent forfeiture of the motorcycle.

    City officials apparently believe that requiring motorcyclists to have EPA-approved exhaust systems is easier to enforce than trying to prove a motorcycle exceeds the city's vaguely defined 80-decibel sound limit.

    Szauter stressed that the AMA has long opposed excessive motorcycle noise and has funded information and public relations campaigns in support of quiet motorcycle use.

    "The issue is that the New York City Council is unfairly singling out motorcyclists because motorcycles are the only vehicles covered under the bill," he said. "If New York City officials believe they have a sound problem, then the problem should be handled through the existing noise ordinance and not through piecemeal legislation targeting specific modes of transportation."

    Szauter added that requiring motorcycles--and no other motor vehicles--to have a stock exhaust system is particularly discriminatory. When the muffler wears out or breaks on a car, the car owner can go to a local muffler shop and get an aftermarket system that costs much less than an original equipment system. The proposed New York City law wouldn't allow a motorcyclist to do that, forcing the motorcyclist to potentially spend hundreds of dollars more for an original equipment system, assuming that system is still available.

    "If a motorcyclist can't find a stock system, then the rider faces stiff fines and forfeiture of the machine, Szauter said. "These penalties are too severe and out of line when compared with other city laws."

    Szauter urged all New York City motorcyclists to contact their City Council members immediately and ask that they reject this discriminatory measure.

    Concerned motorcyclists living outside the area, especially those who work in or frequently visit the city, should contact Speaker of City Council Christine Quinn by telephone at (212) 788-7210; by letter to City Hall, New York, NY 10007; or by e-mail by visiting http://council.nyc.gov/D3/html/members/home.shtml<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=wppqdvcab.0.0.vw9ldxbab.0&ts=s037...>. http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=wppqdvcab.0.0.vw9ldxbab.0&ts=s037...>

    Not Nazis, just humans

    The story about the communist,trade unionist,... Jews, etc. is from Eli Weisel, I think. It is awfully harsh, but it does involve state power. That is why people go back to it regarding issues of freedom.
    A more common metaphor is if you have ever weeded a garden. (or de-rocked your lawn) You pick a spot to start, you sweep the area, and you pull out all the offending plants. Finish a section. Go back and look at your work. You will always look back and say, "How did I miss all those weeds?" They were smaller and did not catch your attention. You meant to get rid of all the really bad ones. You will then repeat the work on your section. Finish. Look back. You will say, "Look at all those little weeds. I better get them out before they grow". And then it begins again.
    You will find this same process in much of our work (cleaning rust off of an old moto part). We devote as much of our energy and time as we think will get the job done, and then if we have a chance, we go back and make sure it is thorough.
    These do-gooder-law-makers have too much time on their hands, and there is no doubt that when they finish with the Harley riders- they will come after the "next-most-loudest" group.

    Join the AMA, and speak up to Harley douches! (I am very unpopular at rides)
    Politics is simply the means to control your environment. (H.S.Thompson)
    Agree with almost every comment above.
