I am a new rider and will be using the bike a lot to commute back and forth to work. Since I am a teacher I was wondering about hard bags. Do they make them for a 96?

For my 99 I bought Givi's Monokey set complete with wing rack mount side bags and top case, a lil pricey but I love it.

Enough room to carry all of my equipment, laptop bag and even a printer all while feeling safe and secure.

I bought a Givi monorack and fitted a topcase off JC Whitney on it for my 96. Motorcycle Travel Trunks : JC Whitney: Motorcycle Parts & Accessories

You just have to make the slots on the back of the case a little wider and it fits the Givi plate perfectly. It works great for my commute. The quality isn't as good as the Givi case but mine is working well. I've had it for six months I think.
