    1991 R/R Fix

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/modifications/14147-r-r-relocation-opinions-needed.html

I went through weeks of forums and came up with some parts and ideas from a number of sites and people and designed what I think is the Ultimate R/R fix for a 3rd generation bike. This setup doesn't even get to hot to touch and is always charging correctly. With the small LED voltmeter I can alwasy watch where things are at.

I beefed up the R/R wiring and then completely changed the R/R and I am happy to say I have not had one peep out of it.

Well, I am not totally convinced yet that the RR is actually my problem. Me and my buddy are wondering if it's not the stator or a ground wire. The bike is running a bit low even when I rev it, sitting at 12.9 when I Rev it to 4000rpms. The RR in my bike looks fairly new, not that it couldn't be bad again. Anything else you guys could suggest for me to check out?

There's a resistance test across the stator legs too.
You should get your manual and go through the flow diagram of tests. You don't want to shotgun approach this and miss something.

OK, well lets eliminate the stator as the problem.

If your battery is holding the appropriate charge and can take the load of starting the bike, it's not the battery.

So get your manual, remove the right side fairing and you will see three plugs. Unplug the stator plug, set your multimeter to 100 Volts and rev the enigine up to 4-5000 rpms again. You should get up to 75 volts. Check your manual for the volt range.

If the stator checks out, its the RR.

Oh, and as others have said, make sure you black ground connection is not loose. Checking all plugs and connections is a good idea.

DO NOT DO AN OHM TEST on the stator. It doesn't mean crap. I found out the hard way. The volatage test is the only way to know.

PM me if you need further details.

Ok, that will be my next thing I try. Do you test the stator just like I did the volts last night?

Well it's like the RR test from the aspect you rev the engine to 5000 rpms and hold it while you take readings, but you don't do the test off the battery.

Unplug the stator plug and stick your multimeter leads into the stator (female) plug end. There are three holes in the plug. Set your multimeter to 100 volts and test away.

Don't forget to plug your stator back together.

Ok, cool, thanks for the heads up Bubba. Hoping to try that and a few other things tonight.

Ok, I haven't done a test on the stator but I am going to go with the R/R. The low voltage I am recieving is due in part to the R/R, or so an experienced mechanic tells me.

Should have added you guys as a big help too...sorry. You guys have been awesome!
