I haven't measured them, Honda website may have the info you want, yes you need to buy a mounting kit.
For what it is worth, I would actually recommend getting the Givi's over the "Honda" ones (yes I know Givi makes the "Honda" ones).

My large HJC AC-12 does not fit in the bags but other larges of different models and brands do. If your a large then the fit may be hit or miss.

The Honda Kit comes with all the mounting hardware and brackets that you will need. The only thing it doesn't come with is the patience required if it's a tough install. There are a few threads about installing the bags and some tips to look out for.

I haven't used the Givi bags, but am happy with the Honda Line Givi bags. My only wish is that they were built a tad stronger, but then they would be heavy. Getting replacement parts for the Honda Line bags is a total PITA. You almost need to purchase a whole set if you need any parts. Maybe getting parts for the Givi's are easier...

I love my bags, one of the major reasons why I bought this bike, but that's just me.

Hey V2Squared....I've got the Honda OEM Hard Bags, and my Shoei XL RF1000 fits with no problem.
As Jason stated above, they are a PITA to install, so if you do them, look myself or Jason up for help if you have any questions.
I purchased mine from the following: Sport - FactoryDirectMotorsportsAccessories.com - Motorcycle, ATV,

Other than the install, I really like them. They are easy to take on & off, and IMO they don't take away from the looks of the bike.

    Good Luck

My Honda OEM hard bags fit my XL Shoei X-11 with room for gloves, MP3, Rag, glasses and a light wind breaker. Yes, that is just in the right bag. the left has the kitchen sink.

The install can be a PITA, if you have aftermarket exhaust it becomes more difficult.
one of my buddies has the GIVI bags (the ones you buy aftermarket) and he cannot fit half as much as i can. Guess honda has Givi make the OEM bags to their specs.

Like was already said they come off easy and DO NOT turn the bike into a form of birth control.

    Enjoy

Large Arai will fit in topcase or sidebags. Installation is not really that bad, there are a lot of steps in the directions but overall it is fairly simple. What makes it tricky are the support plates behind the license plate bracket. I rode cross country loaded down and I've got over 10k miles without these silly brackets with no problems at all.

The only PITA problem I've had with them is fitting the brackets around aftermarket pipes. This requires some creativity, muscle, and 2 people (unless you want to cause more problems). But the headache is worth it for a beautiful sounding useful sportsbike.

The Givis do come in multiple sizes though, so depends what size Givis you get. With the Givi topcase on my BMW, I could fit an XL Arai. I don't believe I can fit a large schuberth in my VFR sidebags. All the Givis (as long as you stay with the motorcycle bags as opposed to their scooter bags) work with the same mounts, so you can have smaller bags to commute with, and larger ones for big trips -- if you wanted of course. Having had Givi top case on my BMW and Givi side and top on my '98 VFR and now the Hondaline ones on my '04, I would still prefer the Givis.

I bought the OEM bags for the 08 model. All the parts came with the bags. The only thing that didnt come with them was patients. The support bracket on the left hand side must have been damaged during shipping. A friend and I had to bend it out about an inch so it wouldnt touch the bike and rub off the paint. On the 08 model for the OEM the bags come with a license bracket. I guess when you buy the 08 model the bracket is already installed. I learned the hard way after I took it off and it looked and was exactly the same bracket that came with the bags:mad::frusty:. I havent tried to put my helmet in the case yet. The bags are definately a plus when touring and make the bike stand out. Good luck on what ever you choose and Merry x-mas e-rbody.

I installed the OEM bags on my '08 two weeks ago. I didn't find the installation as difficult as some have mentioned here. It helps to not tighten the bolts until all the hardware is installed. For my '08, the instructions called for drilling two items that actually didn't require drilling - everything was bolt on and all the required hardware came with the kit.

The mount is extremely sturdy and very easy to put the bags on and off. It is a first rate kit.

I think they are very expensive at $1000 msrp. It helped me a lot on the decision when the dealer gave me a 20% discount coupon as part of my recent VFR purchase, so I got them for $800.

I installed the OEM bags back in June when petrol was 4.25/ gal. We (my wife and I) drove it all summer long back and forth to work and back. Her HJC and my Scorpion EXO-700 fit in the bags just fine. 38 MPG in the city sure beats the 16 I am getting in my Acura TL. Overall, we love the bags and only take the car when it is raining.

Ok, here's a narrative of my hard bag install, done back in 07 (copied from my original post but hey, I'm still in anger management therapy):

    1217: drilled holes to 12mm
    1247: pulled all stock components
    1305: installed brackets A, B and C
    1312: rear plastic in place
1407: right stay positioned, all bolts loosely in place
1441: left stay positioned, all bolts loosely in place
1450: having problems getting bracket A to line up with bracket B
1509: Still having problems, having flashbacks to the 85 Interceptor Luggage Rack Installation Incident
1532: Still having problems, have decided to memorize Chapter 7 of the Lord of Nightmare's Book "Things to Do to Beings who Tick Me Off" then visit the Honda engineer who designed the kit
1546: Having used the "Easy to Follow" instruction sheet to ignite the Honda engineer's efferge with my eye beams of agony, I removed all bolts except for A's to the stays and the 8mm allens as a red haze slowly crept in on my vision and my skin tone began to turn green
1601: Lined up the licence plate bracket (LPB), brackets A and B, LPB bolts inserted facing out. YES I tried to insert them facing in, the damned short collars kept popping out, along with that @*&^#%*!^@!$% LPB spacer! Anyway the bolts and nuts are hidden by the Licence plate and I don't give a flying damn, if you don't like it, you can put them in the other way YOURSELF!
1702: after finally getting the grab rail bolts lined up (with lanuage so fowl a nearby Marine Drill Instructor was taking notes), everything torqued (about as tight as whey were taken off) and blue lock-tighted, I noticed the left top forward bend rubs against the bodywork a bit and put a piece of Pro-Grip tank protector in place as insurancs. Then, my facial expression a study of Pure Death for any foolish enough to wish me a good day, I levitated to my room, took a LONG shower, got dressed and took a LONG ride.

I have the Honda OEM bags and even though the install took sometime I dont believe it was too difficult. I would do it again if I had to. Like others have said if you need replacement parts like the elastic strap or the rope stop you cant get them. I had my bags for about three months and one of my elastic straps broke. Honda said they did not make replacement parts for the bags and there was nothing they could do. $1000 for bags. This is BS

1TonBoy, I purchased the side bags with the bike so they were under warranty. The rope stops on the left bag unraveled. I could not get new rope stops; Honda sent two new bags for free. Go figure. I felt guilty but that is their system.

If Givi makes the Honda bags has anyone tried to get the replacement parts from Givi?

I am considering a top case for my 07 if anyone has an OEM bracket and case they want to part with.

1TonBoy, I had installed the rubber spacers wrong and both had torn. Local Honda also told me I was out of luck so I called Honda Corporate's customer Relations where a guy took my info and said he'd look into it. About 2-3 months later I got a package from him with two new spacers (thinking he'd hit a wall too, I had given up hope). According to the letter he included, the cases and stay kit are made by Givi to Honda specs. The spacers were not available as replacement items but he was able to have a set pulled directly from the production line. I wish I could remember his name because the guy really came through...

    Hey Guys,
I just received the OEM hard saddle bags, top case and all the mounting brackets.
I got them used of off ebay for $750 and they look brand new.

However I don't have the installation instructions. Does any one have them scanned they can post or e-mail me, or better yet has any one done a write up (with pictures) of the how to install.

    Thanks

I've got the Honda bags as well, no problems fitting my XL Joe Rocket fill face lid. And some gloves, windbreaker. And yes, install was a severe pain.

Friend put on my aftermarket pipes, and knew what pain I went thru to put them on as everything had to come back off. Some bolt modification for the exhaust. Look up on bikepics.com 2006; same username for what they look like w/o the bags. That concerned my when I originally purchased.
