I've spent half of forever researching here about GPS mounts for my recently acquired '98 5th Gen and have concluded that the "stem mount" seems the best for me, but I can't seem to get an answer to this question.

How do stem mounts work? My steering head seems to have a black cover over it - does that pop off, or screw off? [I haven't taken delivery of the bike yet...I'm very excited...] Then, I presume there's a hole in the nut beneath the cover? How does the mount fit into that?

I have a TomTom Rider 2 which comes with RAM mount bits. I presume I can get a RAM style mount which goes into the, er, stem-hole? On my old Suzuki SV, I RAM-mounted on the handlebar, but there isn't the room on the viffer.

Sorry to ask a question which might have been covered numerous times previously.

    Thanks in anticipation!

Just pop out the black plastic cover and insert your stem mount into the hole, Make sure use some liquid soap to prevent damage to the O ring. Done :)

Watch the tank as you push and twist the stem down! It takes a good bit of force and water to push the stem mount in all the way.The hinge can loosen if you hold it above the bottom causing mount plate to come loose and scratch the tank.Grip at the bottom and you will be fine.

I actually put a Powerlet outlet there. LOOK HERE

I have the RAM Mount on the clutch side. With the two, it makes it very easy to hook up and disconnect my Zumo. In the off season, I use the Powerlet outlet to connect my battery tender, no taking off the seat.

Thanks guys. Some great tips there. Hey, the power outlet on the stem...how cool was that??
But how does the stem mount fixing actually work? It is like an expanding bolt or something?

Actually it is expanding rubber betwen hex on the top and nut on the botom,so more you tighten the hex the nut goes up and mount is fixed...

OK, so I've just taken delivery of the RAM mount - and I now have the bike - yippee!!

Anyway, unfortunately it seems the expanding, conical-shaped rubber bung thing which fits in the stem-hole is really too small - but only just. My Aus' suppliers says that's the only one they do and recommended wrapping a little insulation tape around the rubber and then tighten it up on that. I will try but am nervous about losing my TomTom when the thing pops out of the hole.

Anyone else have the same experience?

OK, I managed to fit the RAM mount by deploying the insulation tape idea. Seemed to work pretty well and it appears to be reasonably tight. Here it is:-

Yes, I know what you mean. But as long as all of the rubber "bullet" part is inside the stem, it shouldn't really matter. But I think I will try dropping it in a little further.
