I am in the process of searching to buy best and cheapest quietest helmet.I now ride on my old S 800 and it is old...I thought this article may help others.
Hearing loss is permanent therefore must be taken seriously. If you ride on 60+mph frequently like going to work then use ear plugs. You would be surprised how well you hear without the wind noise.

I liked mine OK, I crash tested it.

I had to get smaller cheek pads. The good thing is that you can take the fabric off the cheek pads and reshape them if you're inclined to. I had to because my ear rubbed on them. I got a SparX now,
One thing get the chin skirt ($7) there's a LOT of air that comes up from underneath and in the winter you'll be glad you got it. I put the chinskirt in my new helmet too :)

After looking and searching I end up buying
Scorpion EXO-700 for $150 free shipping
    The helmet looks very cool
    look http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=1429

What sold me was lots of users raving how good they are and that is hard to manufacture.Low level of wind noise.
I wanted to buy Shoie RF1000 great helmet but forking over 300 is not doable now if 150 dollar helmet can perform 95% of RF1000

    Rubo,

If all you have is $150.00 head then that's all you should spend. LOL

there was an old Helmet(shoei) ad that said if you have a ten dollar head buy a ten dollar helmet.
I do like those scorpion helmets though. I have three SHOEI X-Elevens, though.

Reviews have been splattered all over the interwebz that the quality of build and the safety ratings of helmets in the $150-$400 range is equal to that of both the shoei and arai helmets costing $200-$300 more. If you have the money, buy whatever you like, but if you are cost conscious these helmets are just as good as buying the name.

I was reading about track racers wearing $120 solid scorpion EXO 400 and many claim it saved their lives. The point you missed is this.In this rescission down time smart thing to do is find real value without compromising safety and to me money saved can be used to buy tires etc.
To say I got a $150 dollar head is insulting! I am 44 yrs old and have learned few things about life but idiot is who believes spending 500-650 on a helmet performing same as 120 scorpion constitute "smarter" approach to life when that kid is making 10 dollars an hour...Enough said

    Rubo,
I Apologize I, did not mean to insult you. LOL = laughing out loud.
I meant to inject some humor. You are absolutely right on with your post, both of them.
Because I choose to spend more money doesn't make it better, just more expensive.
I do submit however, that when it comes to safety gear one should buy the absolute best equipment you can reasonably afford given your individual circumstances.
Please accept my sincerest apology. No offense was intended.
    Now enough said.

I have an matte black exo 700 and a shoei rf1000 and like them both.
On that note i bought the shoei because of the aerodynamics. There's a huge difference between the two and i find my neck hurting from the Scorp lid. At 75-80 mph(KS freeway speeds) it's hard to see strait because the helmet gets a buffeting effect to it. The Shoei lid is nice and smooth at high speed. I now have the Scorp outfitted with the quiet rider deluxe and pinlock shield for winter riding and it works great.
I hope you ordered your helmet from a site with sizing charts like DennisKirk.com because the Scorpions actually run bigger than most.

As helmets go if it has DOT or Snell or one of the European standards listed on it, it is going to do the job it was built to do, save your head. And yes the shell of one will work as well as the shell from another. Where the price difference comes in is the material the shell is made with, usually a complex matrix or hybrid material to make it lighter. Also the interior will normally be more comfortable with a removable lining. Also more testing in the wind tunnel for better venting and to be more neutral while riding in wind and some will even be quieter. Do you have to have all the extras....No. Are they nice to have...Yes. I like the more expensive brands but I had a little extra cash when i purchased my helmet.

The bottom line is to get a quality helmet THAT FITS YOUR HEAD. It doesnt matter how much you spend for it because there are quality helmets in anyones price range.

Also you can do like me and wait for the closeouts when they become even more inexpensive to buy.

Good luck and buy what is in your price range.

I did checked my size 22.5" and Med was the correct one.I hope its not big:eek:
Hate buying things without trying like buying motorcycles on eBay.
I'll share a great story.I found 1978 "mint" Yamaha 750 triple with 3.5k miles on it.Based on pictures with artistic angles (read blurry close ups) bike looked like a sweet deal for under 800.Luckily it was sold at the dealer close to my house so I went to see it and the site of it was pathetic.Rust on everything from muffler, underside, fenders, bolts and to top it off dead battery. They could not start for me.All these was not obvious on pictures. It was clear the bike was totally neglected.
You are lucky to drive 75-80 mph in KS.Here in Boston area you would be hang cuffed jailed even raped while you are at it.Boston is not motorcycle friendly town...
I used to live in LA where 80mph was common when no traffic that is 2 days out of 360:biggrin:
I don't thing that would be a problem for me since I won't be riding that fast (even though I do manage to sneak fast once in a while when no cops around)

Oddly enough was just comparing notes on the XR(RF)1000 with a work collegue track day junky who has just started wearing one ( had mine since '04 ), the SHOEI is not only quieter than previous Helmets but suffers no buffeting at any speed or wind gusts.
