IIRC I believe I read that they were manufactured by Champion. Don't hold me to it though. I could probably talk to my buddy at Melling Tool Company about it and find out for sure. Hell...I could ask him about the best oils they have used when testing their products for wear and tear...(they must be doing something right if they make the pumps for the Ford GT-40). They are one of the largest automotive oil pump makers in the world...I'm sure they would know.

some day I might switch over to rotella synthetic...however, it would void the warranty I think since it is not motorcycle specific. Until then, I will do some research and see what synthetic people here like in the VFR.

Howdy all, Soundmaster that would really be great to talk to your friend at Melling and see if they have ever done any testing on oil and such. Sometimes these reports are proprietary however if he could just summarize the data for us that would be awsom. eddie

I'll see what I can do. He's really busy right now, but I'm sure I'll run into him at the lake in a week or so.

    Ok gang,

Here it is: the final post to this thread (sure!)

First, I started this post because I thought I had some conflicted information. The Supertech ST7317 is the correct filter for this application, not the ST7137. I beleive that I must have transposed the 3 and the 1 when I went to Wal Mart the other day, so I was the one who was in error. However, all was not lost as I did all of my service work today.

Within the past two weeks I've installed new headlamps (Philips Crystal Vision Ultra), replaced the chain with an RK X-Ring 520/110, and tonight I have flushed out the cooling system and am now running Engine Ice (much thanks to KC-10FE for his excellent tutorial), changed out the brake pads with Galfers, and last but not least, finally changed the oil with Shell Rotella 5/40 and the little bugger that started this, a Supertech ST7317 Oil Filter.

Next time I'm going with the Purloators!

    All the best
