I am partial to the Glock because I have small little girly hands, and honestly all the Beretta M9's I shot in the Marines, grip is just too damn fat for me

This post is a sad indication of the kill or be killed f'd up mindset of the good ol US of A.

I was going to go on a rant, but decided that there would nothing that I can say, that you don't already know.

This thread scares the hell out of me being a Brit

The concept of anyone carring a weapon and a gun in particular is completly alien to most of us over here.

To think that I might be going for a ride to see my stepson for example would require me to make sure I had my Walther PPK before I left is disturbing.

Is this thred representive of the bulk of the US population??

Personally I carry mine even when I am not on my bike. The criminals and crack heads out there can have a gun and it is a good way to protect yourself and your family. Yes, to the people outside of the US, we sound like gun carrying cowboys but that is just how it is.

Not to worry Tris. None of us is going to shoot you if you go riding with us. Remember, the US is a very large place with lots of isolated places and unfortunately lots of not so nice types of people both rural and urban. It would be wonderful if we were as civilized as you guys are, or think you are anyway. The reality is I rarely ever carry a weapon when I ride. I have on
occasion. I would imagine this is true for most of us. If group riding I don't, I have a group with me. I have yet to meet up with an armed group of crazed motorcyclists anywhere nor have I witnessed anybody running around solo shooting up the place, like some would like you to believe. I own weapons because I want to and thankfully those whose opinion is that I shouldn't be able to legally has not prevailed. You are not in any danger of being shot by me unless you attempt to harm me. Simple as that. You are also not in danger of being stabbed or pummeled or run over by me either unless you behave the same way. If you choose not to own a weapon or carry one while riding that is your choice and I have no problem with it nor will I attempt to convince you otherwise. It's a shame that my feeling on that is not always reciprocated. Now that I have said my piece on that I will retire from this thread gracefully for I see where it is going and I have no desire or the time for rehashing a debate that never ends or convinces anyone to change their view. If you're scared come on over and you can ride with me brother.

Pretty wimpy IMO. If we suddenly had our guns taken away even though it is our God given right to have as many as we want handed down from generation to generation from the Father of the Father of Our Country, George HW Bush, we couldn't do some of the neat shit here:

First off I have to agree w/ vfourbear, I do not generally carry & when I do most times its due to wildlife concerns. I've had to deal w/ bears & wolves @ close quarters w/o a weapon before, personally find it more reassuring & less stressful with one. I carry in urban areas very rarely, but when I do it is for the same reason only the players are different. It allows a cool level headed individual to difuse a potentially dangerous encounter very quickly. Often just the knowledge or sight of a firearm being present is enough to deter most humans & a shot or two in the air is enough to deter most animals.
I personally have not experienced all that many things that make me feel I need to arm myself. But I have a good a riding buddy that criss crosses the country on a regular basis on his bike. He has experienced several attempts of theft of his bike @ out of the way rest areas ( usually involving a car load of individuals ) & of course the overly friendly Harleydood that wanted to share his sleeping bag that followed him @ speed all the way across PA. I learn from other peoples experiences so I would prefer to be armed & never need to use the weapon. Than being in a situation of need & not having a weapon; this said if you don't posses the ability to aim & pull the trigger your better off not being armed.

This is for sure. I would much rather share a sleeping bag with an overly friendly Harleydood than a bear. Bears are terribly unreasonable IMO.

To be honest the times I've been to the States I've never felt threatened.

Last year we came over and did a big loop from New York up through New England and back and are planning to come again next year.

Everyone we come across was polite and went out of their way to help the poor foreigners that were lost. (Unlike the UK should the roles have been reversed I might say)

So I'm not running in fear and trepidation that every American I come across wanting to shoot me.

It this whole mind set over the the acceptabilty (or not), the concept of a "right" to carry weapons and a complete lack of exposure to them here in the UK. It still surprises me  when I go into a UK airport and come across a Copper carrying a gun.
