Now that I have your attention I would like to share a conversation that I had with a customer today.

We were talking about bikes. I mentioned seeing so many people on bikes near Chicago that do not have helmets on. He then mentioned, im my own words, in an accident, the weight of a helmet would help to cause a wiplash. My next statement was that if you are going fast enough that a wiplash would happen just because of the added weight of the helmet, then you are going to hit the pavement anyway.

He did not have much of a response.

    Your thoughts?

I was readended a few years ago pretty badly, and was projected through the air landing on my jaw/face. Without my helmet, I would be most likely dead. And I will wear a full face helmet for the rest of my life, no matter what bike I ride.

From a medical perspective helmets save lives. Just the other day I flew a drunk dude that went over the bars of his Harley wearing a half helmet. His forehead was cut to the skull where the helmet stopped and his face was cut from his chin to the inside of his right nostril. Can't imagine the carnage with no helmet at all.
I have NEVER seen a case of helmet induced whiplash.

I'm guessing you don't watch racing on the tube much. A Hans device is a racing helmet movement restrictor. I saw one last week for bikes. Sorry don't remember where.
So anyway what he was refering to would be that someone make a Hans device not just for racing but for the street. And they're usually used in cars.
Hans Is the name of the guy that invented it.

Helmets do NOT kill people. An improperly fitting helmet reduces the efficiency of a helmets ability to protect. Untrained persons removing helmets from a crash victim increases the chance of an injury. That said, it is also true that helmets will not protect you in EVERY instance, but better to have one an increase your chances of little to no injury, than to not have it and have a 100% chance of being injured.

For what it's worth, I was told the other day it is impossible to keep your head off the street in any crash over 30 mph. This could be BS but I'll take it as gospel.

Hmm, I used to think 'I'm on a bike anyway - 80% of people would say that in itself represents a death wish. So what difference will another little risk make?'

My view is - if you have health insurance, you should be allowed to decide if you wear a helmet on a bike or seatbelts in a car. As long as the consequences of your actions will be felt only by yourself (and not by the taxpayer), government should stay out.

I wouldn't even think of going out without a helmet. I hate swallowing live flies.

Seriously though, I'm glad to have non Snell rated helmets in Europe. That is one weird safety standard. I'm on the 'crumple zone' side of the debate, ie the helmet should be softer to aborb one large area hit and then a couple of bounces/scrapes. Not the Snell 'two times in the same place by an iron orange (wtf?) travelling at 100mph'...

Wrong way round, first test with helmet on, then without. If without helmet first they probably would not be fit to do it again with a helmet on.

Sounds to me like his head had already hit the pavement.

I hear similar arguments (excuses) for not wearing seat belts, like being trapped in a burning vehicle or under water.
