Finally got some pics of the beast. I mentioned before that my neighbor gave me this bike just to get it out of his yard. I've replaced the hoses, clamps, brake pads, flushed the radiator and brake lines, changed the oil, put plugs in and replaced the rear tire, windscreen and fuel tank.

I also spent two weeks cleaning the accumulated dirt and insect life, then sanded and painted the bike black (The original paint was trashed). I've ordered decals for it.

My neighbor also gave me a trashed '84 Goldwing that I traded to a local motorcycle salvage yard for the windscreen, pads, tire and tank.

So right now I have a total investment of $58 tied up in it and it runs like it's on fire.

Thank you guys for all of your help, I honestly would not have had the balls to tackle a project like this without knowing that I had access to the incredible support available from you aces on this forum.

Thanks guys...looking at the pics I noticed that I forgot to fasten down the brake line guide to the front fender mounting bolt. Oops. Will go out and fix that in a minute.

The only aftermarket mods I've made are some retro turn signals (Off Craig's List-$5, they came in an old original box simply marked "Motorcycle Turn Signal Lamps" and were dated 1963!) and some LED running lights. I've also disassembled the mufflers and wire brushed and anti-rust coated the insides with high-temp Krylon.

Anyway, with any luck I'll get years of enjoyment out of the Filthy Beast. My hope here is to learn enough to become a regular contributor to VFRworld.

I've followed this thread a bit as i recently picked up an 84 vf500f. i think one of the first things I'd like to do is get in touch with Jamie. The new bike now resides next to my 800.

If you had the 85 color scheme I'd swear your avy was me.... I think you might even have the same jacket (Joe Rocket Reactor 1.0).
