I have just got a 1984 honda interceptor vf500f for my first motorcycle. This is the first time ever working on a motorcycle and it is a good time to go over the bike with winter on the way. This forum seems that it could help. So what are somethings that I should look at? Is there any good places to look for parts besides ebay? The steering seems to be off a little like maybe half inch (handle bars are straight and the front tire is off to the right a little) Should I look at getting new forks or a steering assy? Also the left front down pipe is dented pretty bad and need new down pipe. Is there a good after market exhaust or should I look at buying a set of down pipes on ebay? Not really looking to dump a lot of money in the bike just enough to make it safe to ride for a year and then either put more money in it in upgrades or get a bigger bike. Thanks for the help look forward to reading the responses.
find a local salvage yard. They are getting harder to come by but we still have a "pull your own" parts yard here in Denver. When I was down there last weekend, they had two semi complete bikes and about 4 engines. Misc parts like header pipes would be an easy score at a salvage yard but you'd probably get raped on ebay especially after shipping. The salvage yard is like a pawn shop; a good yard will usually ask for a fair price but there's sometimes room for a little negotiation if you're dealing with the right guy. As far as learning, just start reading through old threads. There are pages of them and you might start to learn just how much you don't know. Good luck, be safe. BTW - this thread is useless without pictures!
Welcome! Hey, another 1st gen owner! As far as the forks, try loosening the triple clamps and then have a buddy hold the front wheel straight while you straighten the handle bars. It should work. Pretty hard to twist front forks so they are bent like what you describe. Post up a picture of the bike. Love those 500F's! Also, go on over to V4Hondabbs.com and look around. Lots of info on 1st generation V4's over there too.
