Yep, you're being completely fair. Still, I'd get something in writing. It would protect both of you. You in the sense that they'd admit financial responsibility, and them in the sense that you couldn't go back to them and demand more money later on (not that you would do that of course).

That written agreement should be signed and (maybe) notarized, and should include a log of payments made, signed and dated by both parties.

I'm no lawyer and have no idea how such a doc would hold up in court, but I see this as a way to avoid that in the first place.

Not to get off topic, but I'm a business owner and went through having to remove a partner from my firm. I can tell you that in NJ at least, that if you sign any "contract", it WILL hold up. it does not matter if the contract is flawed, wrong, outlandish, unfair, has type-Os or anything else.

You are being fair buttonhook, and I hope it works out for you.

A BIT OFF TOPIC: Years ago and in a different state, if one of your farm animals was killed by a wild animal, the state reimbursed you for it. Probably wouldn't apply to a domestic animal, though, and really shouldn't. The tax payer shouldn't have to pony up for the negligence of others.

Lots of good advise here. Involving lawyers at this stage may be premature and you have to consider their costs as well. I can't decide for you on that. But for the 42.00 cost of a reciept book, I would give them a written reciept for each payment they make so that you do have a paper trail to fall back on. Stay your course. I believe you are doing just fine
