    Hey all,

I am looking around for a GPS unit for my bike. I am currently using Google Maps or Yahoo Maps to plan some of my day trips around in San Francisco bay area. There are lots of small roads and I want to be able to use a number of way points for each trip. Does anyone have recommendations for a GPS units that is that can easily import way point from i.e. Google, Yahoo or other software? It does not need to be motorcycle specific GPS unit.

    Cheers.

Mapquest will download routes and waypoints to a Garmin. Specifically to a Garmin, other brand names are not listed as supported. I have used it and it works well.

I have a Garmin Zumo 550 which I highly recommend. It came with it's own map software that allows creating routes that can be downloaded to the GPS. This feature is probably common to most GPS's.

Yes, the new Garmins are compatible with online mapping and wav points. I believe the newer Garmins can work with googlemaps too. I'm not100%. My Nuvi 760 is a year+ old now.

If you're not looking to spend the money on a Zumo, the "cheapest" Garmin that will allow you custom routing is the nuvi 7xx series. I use a 750 and really love it.

Last time I checked, the only thing you could export from Googlemaps to the Garmin was individual waypoints/POIs. I have no experience with Mapquest but if you can actually export routes into the Garmin I will switch my loyalty from Gmaps to Mapquest ;)

I usually make the routes in GMaps then use Garmin MapSource to make the route again making sure it's along the roads I want and load them into the Nuvi. It's not a bad program, but GMaps is just more intuitive.

I use a Garmin Zumo 550, it works great! Map source software (for Garmin) is easy to use and yes you can find all the back roads and set the auto routing feature to find a variety of roads from interstate to dirt roads.

Beware there is one thing to be aware off.... with a GPS, you will tend to lead most of the time.
