Honda VFR1200F first road test verdict
    By Phil West
    First rides & tests
    30 November 2009 16:50

The long-awaited Honda VFR1200F has been just undergoing its first road test in the hands of MCN Executive Editor Phil West, this is what he has to say:

“After riding Honda’s new VFR1200F over 300kms in southern Spain I have to say it’s a good bike – but not a great one.

And after all the hype and expectation (Honda themselves are pumping it up as “the Ultimate Road Sports Motorcycle” and it’s simply not) that is not good enough.

“To justify that tag, the new VFR should offer abilities and specification head and shoulders above all others. It doesn’t.

"Although the basic powertrain, complete with V4 character, stability and build quality impress, there are simply too many niggly faults or omissions to be ignored.

"The tank is too small, the switchgear baffling, the instrumentation too basic, the touring accessories not good enough. It shouldn’t be that easy to find fault with a flagship machine.

“But nor does the new VFR grab you emotionally as much as it should. Though the V4 drone and torquey drive is present and correct and the glossy finish alluring, in most other respects Honda’s new 1200 leaves me cold and that certainly can’t be said of rivals from BMW, Ducati (the forthcoming Multistrada) and Triumph.

“As it stands, I’m reasonably impressed by, and have a good deal of respect for Honda’s new VFR, but I’m truly struggling to think of any compelling reason to want one or generate any true lust for it and that’s, surely, a tragic place for a flagship motorcycle to be.”

that doesn't sound good. that is the worst review I've ever heard of any VFR including the prone to fail chain tensioner models from early on. (of course I only heard reviews of those years afterwards)

All I can say is it was a sad day when Soichiro Honda died. I wonder if the 1200 engine will fit in my 2nd gen.

I just picked up a copy of Rider magazine and they have a complete road test on the VFR1200. I won't have a chance to read it until this weekend. I can't wait. I'm not crazy about the looks, but I certainly don't want this bike to fail. I'm hoping for the best .....

Today I picked up a copy of Cycle World and Motorcyclist magazines as both also have articles on the VFR1200. I'm going to try to get them read this weekend. I hope I become a believer.

Same here with my 6th Gen. Let's face it, the FJR1300 looks more like a next gen VFR than the 12 does. If I had to replace my VFR it would be with another VFR. If I couldn't get hold of another VFR, then it'll be one of these:

    Honda NT700V
    Kawasaki Contours 14
    Yamaha FJR1300
    Suzuki GSX-R1000

I went in to my local Honda and got my deposit back today on the VFR1200. With the write up, small fuel tank, low milage to the tank and a small luggage I am now on my third VFR 800. I pick up the new one next weekend. Its a new 2007 with ABS and the deal was amazing. I also like the candy red.

Dude, if you want a 600 lb. sport bike that's putting 120-130hp to the rear wheel and doesn't come with luggage or a center stand....well, we already own one don't we?

I agree. I am going to wait until this piece of shit drops in price to $99.95+S&H on Ebay. Phil West is my new God. I have ordered his glow in the dark bobblehead statuette with the optional Velcro tab to stick to my tank.

I am truely sorry that Phil has trouble with the switchgear. I wonder if he has the same problem with stick shifts and clutches in cars. Other than that he is perfect.

I can sure understand the Brit guy's bias when comparing the new VFR to a Triumph. I can't wait to see what Werner VonFrankfurter and Pasquale Pastrami think of it when comparing it to a BMW and a Ducati..

I may not be able to sleep tonight worrying about that muffler. God if someone doesn't make a replacement, I just don't know what I will do.
