I am hearing a slight ticking in the engine and I am wondering if this is an indication that it may need a shim or two. As It seems to run fine, I am wondering what it might be if not a valve adjustment

what model and year? How many miles? Have the headers been of the bike? is there any suit around any of the header flanges? How long have you been hearing the noise? At what temp does your bike normaly run? Do you hear the noise at start up and at tempeture? When was the last time you changed your oil?

Oh yea... Welcome to the forum!

Hi steven, it's a 2000, with 17,000 mi., the bike running temp is around 180, it ususually gets warmed up before hearing it. I don't believe the headers have been off. I got her used. I have been hearing the noise for aobut a 1000 mi. which @ 16k the manual calls for a check of the valves. There does't seem to be any performance drop off that is noticeable.oil was changed about 1800 mi. repsol and I just changed it again and put her up for the winter. so if a valve check needs to be done, this is the time to do it. thanks, FM

Not sure if that from the valves, Many member here including myself never have to make any adjustment to the valves on 16K, I have the stealership work on my bike 16k service and all they did is inspect and all valve clearance are within spec.
Some of the members skip there 16k valves job and perform at 32k and the valves are still in spec..........Hope some one here can pin point ur problem. BTW I remember one of the member have the same problem and he spend thousand of dollars with the STEALERSHIP to find the problem and it not even from the valves.

As scuba stated it is rare that the valves would be out of spec at the 16K mark but honda does recomend that they be checked at that point. My suggestion would be to replace the exaust gaskets before spending the money or time on a valve check. A slight leak can sound similar to a tick. The steel headers and the alunimum head expand at different rates as they warm up and it is possible to have a leak that only occurs once the engine has reached operating temp.

    Face,
Give it a good look over first. Could be and exhaust leak. The exhaust gaskets are crushable copper rings that are one use only. The ticking could also be from your cam chain tensioners. The front one, because of the way it sits, sometimes doesn't get the lubercation it needs. Before you do anything drastic like drop 800 bones on a valve check, try changing to a different brand of oil and see if that makes a difference.
