Did you get to ride it very long after the speedo stopped working? It's the first sign of electrical problems. Check your battery voltage-I'll bet it's below 12 volts. Does it have the original R/R (regulator/rectifier)?
Do a search on here for the MANY posts on fixing it. Start by getting Tightwads wiring harness fix at WIREMYBIKE. Good luck.

Before you go tearing the electrical all apart, you may want to check the cable and the connector just aft of the clutch slave cylinder. There is a plastic part inside that is known to fail on occasion. If that is ok, check the connectors and wiring specific to the speed sensor.

Thank "you all" for your recommendations.... thank you very much.... i am not very experienced in repair...
i actually had just had the Bike worked on by my Mechanic... OIl change, plugs, fuel filte, misc.? r.... Speedo was working prior to leaving w/ him.... when i got it back the speedo was bouncing all over the place... and then finally stopped on second ride after svc.
You have given me several things to try.

yeah sounds like your cable... I actually took mine off and out, then shortened the housing on the upper end closer to the gauges. it worked fine after that. But you also have to check your drive nut inside your speedo housing near the sprocket. that piece is plastic and tends to get worn...

No cable on the 97! ITs like karazy stated more then anything else. Plastic adapter that connects the speed sensor to the front sprocket
