    Hi there,

so I am picking up my 4th Gen VFR this weekend. I am using a hitch mounted rail carrier to transport it from SF to LA. My question is, how do I secure the bike? Can I just run tie-downs up to the bars or does the fairing interfere?

    Thanks,
    Tim

ill say it before anyone else does: duct tape! and zipties.

Im not sure with the 4th gen, and someone will chime in, but on my 6th gen the fairings interfere with tieing it down save for across the seat and over the front wheel(not the plastic splash guard) you could try taking the farrings off though and blanket the tank.

The way I've always done it is to buy a set of soft loops. The soft loops wrap around each handle bar, extend downward about 6-8 inches, then are attached to the end of your tie down. On all of my Interceptors, the soft loops clear the fairing.

Go to walmart. In the automotive section where the tiedown straps are you can get a pair of softloops for $1.88. The worked great for my transport from Minneapolis to Des Moines.

Go to CycleGear at 11th & Harrison(across from Costco), you can get tide downs there.

I also use Canyon Dancers to tie my bikes down. Are you planning to use a hitch rail which goes across the rear of the car/truck? If so, I think a VFR will be WAY too heavy for one of those.

I don't know about the 4th gen but I had to pick up my RC51 in Indy and trailer it back to Nashville...I went to Lowes and bought a 4 pack of ratchet straps ($11) and rented a motorcycle trailer from uhal($15). I wrapped one strap around each bar and ran it on the inside of the fairing (basically following the forks down) compressing the forks, then I wrapped one strap around the rear wheel, and finally used the extra strap over the seat. The bike didn't move an inch on the 400 mile trip home. good luck and congrats on the bike!:cheersaf:

I am using a hitch rail, but I have a totally new hitch system welded in that can support 900+ lbs of tongue weight, and the rack is advertised to hold 600lbs. I'm a little nervous but I don't want to drag a trailer all that way...
