The insurance wants to total the bike... I need to decide if I should get the bike back and repair it or walk away... this is too hard because the amount they want to give me is pretty good but I still need to pay off the balance which will cut into the money remaining. i can buy it back for $800 of my settlement and will have about $2650 let over to buy parts and fix the bike. HELP! I don't know what to do!

I don't care if the bike has a salvage title as I'll never get rid of it. Is there anything else I should worry about with a salvage title? Insurance? registration?

Boy this is a tuff one especially when you add in the personal part, I know how it is when we get attached to our VFRs $800 for the buy back, Salvage titles are ok when you know what you have, and like you You're not about selling it any time soon, it's your baby. so if I read between the lines they are giving you appox. $3400 ($800+$2600) and then you still owe on it? or is that paid off? or $3400 for another machine? It depends on the owe part. if you are in it to deep then yea I would buy it back. it's not like you don't know what you have in this case. That's what makes salvage titles sketchy is you don't know what you're buying. license wise I never had any hassle. Yes I totally understand your dilemma, decisions decisions. Huh? boy this could have been so much worse, good to hear it didn't.

So, are you going to have $2650 to use after the bike is bought back and paid off? If so, you can rebuild for that much easily. As long as it still runs, looks like you just need a a new windscreen, upper fairing, headlamps (maybe), instruments (maybe) seat cowl, and a repaint. Tank still looks good, just discolored. I bet you can find everything for less than a grand if you scour ebay and the classified here and vfrd.

You'll have to re-title the bike through DMV with a salvage. Then to get it on the road, you'll have to get the head and brake lights, brakes, and frame and engine numbers checked by CHP or a dealer licensed to do so (another $50-$75). Its no big deal with that really, and this way, with your salvage, you know there are no road going issues, just plastic damage that can be fixed.

I'd be nervous about the electrical harness. wires might carry voltage now, start moving that thing around and crispy wire shielding will start cracking and shorting out. The stuff behind the plastics could be just fine but anything up around the bars where the mirrors melted right off is going to be in bad shape.

fork seals are probably hard and soon to leak, radiator hoses, etc..

Finding a donor used bike that has the majority of parts for $2000 would be huge if trying to fix it up. Part out what you don't need for added cash but it would have all the misc parts and pieces including an electrical harness that hasn't been baked for 30min at 400degrees (or whatever).

That road would be a heap of work but you could own your bike with no payments and know exactly what you have. Or like you said in chat, take the money and run to someone with a leftover brand new '08 and have small payments and no work.

Now that the emotions of this afternoon's totaling of the bike has run its course I have come to a logical decision. As much as I completely appreciate the offers of help and parts from my fellow VFRW brothers, it's time to let go. I have decided to take the money and run. I have learned that my local dealer has (11) 2008 SILVER VFR non ABS bikes available in the warehouse. The only issue is that American Honda has not discounted the 2008 model year YET. The 2007's are the only one's currently reduced but their numbers are dwindling. the dealer believe's the 2008 models are next. I WANT the Silver VFR, I like the RWB, and ruby red is OK but the silver is the only color that really gets my blood moving. I'll find out in the next few days if the discounts are coming for the 08' models. I will be retrieving the Leo Vince exhaust and the 2 week old tires from SilverSurfer800 #1 in hopes of installing them on the new model.

It will be sad to see her leave; it was way before her time to go. We had fun over the last 3 years with 45,000 miles and shared many adventures. She will be missed but never forgotten!

Oh yeah, I gotta remember to snag the full tool kit under the seat too! :eyebrows:

sounds like a pretty logical way to go. 45,000 miles vs. 0 miles... You were already used to making payments and they fit your budget.

dang it Wayne! Sorry to see that. I would really think hard about keeping a bike that went thru that much heat. I think it may me better if they paid you off to buy a new one and make it like you want again. That much heat will no doubt cause havoc on wires, rubber and metal. Glad everyone is ok and its just temporary, you'll be up and running good as new soon.

OK, I got the exhaust, tires and tool kit! The shop was nice enough to swap old tires for my brand new units so when i get a garage again I'll be able to store them until needed. Now I need to search for a dealer that has a 2008 in stock so i can start negotiating. Any of you California VFRW members have a local dealer with a 2008 in stock (the 08' bikes are SILVER of course!!)? I'll have a insurance check in about 1-2 weeks so I'll be on the hunt.

We should get power and gas back in the house by Tuesday so I'll be able to kiss this hotel goodbye! The demo of the garage will start next week so I'll post progress pictures of the process and the finished project. Now I just need a place to store the CB750 until everything is done...

So good to hear that things are working out. I think you are making a good decision. Good luck with you search! Has the insurance guy decided how to handle the aluminum cans?

Says one is available here in Auburn...Tomorrow, if nothing else gets my attention and there's good weather, I can ride up and investigate if you want...

At vfr2k2: The exhaust survived with just smoke damage. I'll just polish those cans up without a problem. I was thinking of using black high heat paint on the pipe leading from the cat unless this is detrimental to anything...

At Bweiss: Wow, Alburn is a lot closer than the bike I found in Ontario, CA! Thanks! If you can take a look I can make the trip as soon as the insurance check arrives, Thanks!

Came in late, but I am sorry for your losses. At least the family is safe and nothing blew up. I wouldn't have kept the bike myself, who knows what electrical parts fried or melted do to the heat and it might have ended up as a money pit every time something new comes up. Kinda like my commuter car which got in a wreck not to long ago, money pit as things keep coming up. For example, lol, after the wreck the hood latch worked even though the hook was slightly warped. Got a new hood and the latch gave out one day and the hood flew up in my wife's face on the interstate. So I had to get a new latch and another new hood :(

damn, they said rare, but gave you well done!, glad to hear everyone is ok, sorry about the ride.

I would have let the bike go too......electronics + high heat = F.O.R.D (Found On Road Dead) or G.M.C (Got My friends Comming)

man sorry to hear that whoa.... the first thing everyone is safe is the main concern and glad to hear that...hope they fix the power and get you home soon,, the bike looks like it can be saved just bodywork damage..if not ,there are more out there and you can always get another one later........insurance usually will not total it unless usually the frame is damaged or the replacement to fix it is more then book value....then what they will do is pay the bank book value the difference in balance will be there.your bike looked clean so i see them fixing it replacing the bodywork... i hope it works out for ya keep us posted.....good luck..

Update: The Insurance is paying out for the bike so I should get my check in a few days. I'm not waiting for it and will be making the trip to Auburn Saturday to make a deal for the 2008.

The old garage demolition starts on Monday, weather permitting. Cross your fingers, they may have power and gas back on in the house by the end of the day today so we can move out of the hotel after 2 weeks! Pictures of the mayhem soon...
