i'm not sure but the a-stars look like a racing boot. living in wi, ya might want a water resistant boot that's comfortable when yer off the bike. take a look at the sidi line. the strada rain is in yer price range and offers the comfort of a touring boot but looks good as well as being water resistant. the vertigo rain is also water resistant, looks racier but probably not as comfortable. i have 2 pair of sidi's (track and touring). the strada i have is 6 years old and will probably need to be resoled but they are so much more comfortable than the vertigo boot. even though the strada says water resistant, i was in a 5 hour rain in florida and my feet never got wet. a-star has some water resistant boots as well and are a good italian made boot. i stuck with sidi's as i'm familiar with them (my cycling shoes also) so know their fit. good luck.

I have been looking to pick up a pair of these myself. From what I understand theses are much more comfortable off the bike than the smx-r which is more of a racing boot. I believe it has something to do with the size of the sole being larger on the smx-5 making them easier to walk in. Good luck and if you find a really good deal let the rest of us know about it.

I like the A stars too. In fact all of my gear, including my socks are A-Stars, except the boots. I found I got a little more bang for the buck with TCX. After wearing A-stars boots for years I tried these TCX competitions (see link) out and I find them to be the best boot I've ever worn. Much more protection then the SMX model and more comfortable for a wider foot. I can happily walk and ride in these all day long, be it track or street. Weather protection is very good and they offer great temp control in hot or cold with good sock selection. They are $70 dollars more than the SMX but you're getting quite a bit more. A comparable A-Stars boot is closer to $350-$400. You can't go wrong with A-stars either but I tought I would offer another option.

I missed this thread when it was first posted.

The boot you described Spid is what I wear. I've had them for about half a riding season. I really like them, theyre a lot of boot for the money, very comfortable on and off the bike, easy on and off. There are of course more expensive boots out there and many are more race oriented, but this one has worked well for me.

Thats about the best I can do for you, good luck.

I can't give opinions on boots as I've yet to get myself a set yet. It is coming soon however. What I can do is hopefully save you some money. Check out the WERA forums and see what RidersDiscount is offering. They give some sweet discounts on there that will save you some loot.

Usually it seems like what they end up doing is knocking somewhere between 20%-30% off on stuff. Check their section in the for sale area for the exact details on it.

I am in my second winter in a pair of Alpinstar Winter boots and love them. I got a size larger than I normally wear so I can wear a heavier sock. But it would not wear them in the summer. Too warm.

Yeah Brother, definately the most comfortable performance boot that I've used. My foot is on the wider side of normal and the TCX's finely gave me a realistic option. For my foot it's the only Italian boot that doesn't pinch, and they actually look a lot better on your foot than they do in the pics. The protection is unreal good.
