Snorkle and airbox inlet flow on '86 700/750 ?

So, my bike was "jetted" by the original owner, when a full Supertrapp system was put on. From looking at the carbs, that appears to be no more than pulling the snorkle and the charcoal canister, and otherwise mucking with externals. All the mixture plugs are in place (although I haven't pullled the slides to check for shims or see if the needles take clips).

Bike runs pretty well, odd high/low idle (couple seconds high, couple seconds low, high, low, etc.). So it's probably out of tune, but not by much. I just finished isolating off the emissions stuff to test things out (isolate complicated pieces to find faults on one side or another).

And realized when putting things back together today that the snorkle is missing (as in, I realized that it's supposed to have one, and it doesn't). Also, how the #%@#$! does this thing breathe in air? Only those two passages through the frame and then around the edges of where the tank and frame come together? There's a dam to block all the radiator air from reaching the airbox, and that hot air vents out the fairing sides, and the NACAs in the fairings blow air across the bottom of the carbs and cool the V and intake ports, but where does this thing breath in from?

I've run it sans airbox/filter (just the plate), and it sounds like it's MUCH happier without, although I'm certain it would need a hell of a retune.

Did Honda get this all right from the factory, and the only choices are mostly screw-ups short of major surgery? (My 350Z is like that, everything short of forced induction is practically a net loss in drivability or power).

 

A hunting idle is a vacuum leak, inspect the vacuum line connections (5 on a California bike) and the boots. Very common to damage boots when installing the carbs , alot of the time the carbs will not sit all the way down so look to see that they all sit equal or remove and inspect.

 

Carbs haven't been removed in like 10 years... But a cracked boot would definitely explain it. Finally get to ride today, we'll see if it was in the emission stuff or the boots.

 

went out for a short ride, and it's certainly a happy bike. It's still a bit rough on idle, and hunts, but idle is still set too high (1500 or so). When I go into work tomorrow I'll drop that down to where it should be once it's really nice and warm. This bike really changes character as it warms, and on cool days, often never feels like it's really warm.
