I know there are a lot of variants to this question, but what do you think is the longest a rider should be on his/her bike in a day?

That is a very loaded question. Like you said, many...too many variables. As long as you remain attentive to your riding , stay riding. When you become complacent, sore or non attentive for ANY reason. park it

Any longer than 24 hours a day really messes with the time-space continuum.

I did ten hours once, stopping only for gas. i was well rested and stayed hydrated, but i was so sore for a week after that. the micron pipe put my right leg to sleep after 3 hours......the problem is by the end you dont care anymore you just want to haul ass and get where your going.

Yep lots of variables. I can only tell you what I've done. Following day from a 2k motorcycle trip, rode 1000 miles in 18hrs(porker run). Raced a bunch of 24hr roadraces with a maximum sleep time of 2 1/2hrs in a 36 hour period. Have done many 5-600 mile days riding a good 12 hrs a day.
So it depends on the person, bike, riding conditions and most of all the mental condition of the person doing it.

Otherwise I don't need anybody telling me how long I can or should ride on my motorcycle. It doesn't matter what anybody thinks of how long a person should be behind the wheel or on a bike. The biggest factor is the person doing it. Ask Ivan "Ironman" Stewart about that. Sorry but this question resembles something a safetycrate would ask before trying to make an "all peoples saftey law" or the alike for law suites or high insurance rates.

Then again I know posers that think 1 hour is two long.

    1hr too long??? umm ok,

What I have done: Rode from home to moosejaw then an hour south total = 806km in 9h45mins, I stopped for fuel as needed and at every fuel stop I took time to walk around, or just lay down on the ground. Biggest problem i found was no music, that has been fixed now, but having something to entertain you does help. just keep your attenion on the road and the cage behind you. if your not use to long rides then you will be sore, hot tub makes it feel better

    +1 on that Randy.

As soon as you become too relaxed and not worried about what the idiot cagers and/or wildlife are doing around you.....park it for the night. Tomorrow's another day for riding.

I was just going to post this as well...except the Moosejaw thingy. I drove down to Atascadero from BC last year and like Zen suggested, I didn't just stop for fuel. I got off the bike and went for a short walk getting the circulations going. I didn't lay down on the ground though cause it was pissing down rain both going and coming. And I am older than dirt with injuries so long rides can be accomplished by most if handled the right way.

I fell asleep on my old CB650, about 25 years ago. I was young and invincible back then. I had just got off a long shift, drove an hour to catch the midnight ferry, slept the 2 1/2 hour trip and started the 2 hour ride to my destination. About 2 miles from the end, I woke up to see a cabbie had fallen asleep and had strayed into my lane.

I'm not sure why we both woke up at the same time and avoided the collision, but I still believe in angels, to this day.

I prefer to keep it to 800km or less, though i've done 1000.7 km in one day. If you budget 500-600km/day that means you're not in a hurry

500km a day is a nice day. if it was all interstate then that would be an awful day. if the roads are somewhat interesting and challenging its surprising how alert and good you feel.most importantly stay hydrated! lack of hydration is the biggest cause of fatigue.
