I just pulled mine out when I broke them. Never replaced them. Don't care.
Removing the fairings is super easy now.

I have an 87 too. It's a dream to take off the cowlings. I used to do it sometimes just for cleaning them and the engine etc. I just called Honda Motor Co. and came really close to asking them if they could come pick up this lead sled. I was conviced to try other dealers. My dealer told me to trade this bike I would need $3800 down. Basically my bike has depreciated $100 per mile.

I'M too old to think I'M a genius or anything like I did when I was 24,yet I'M not a complete imbecile when it comes to turning a wrench, yet here I AM unable to remove and replace the fairing to a damn Honda. 1/2 of me says to Swiss cheese this bike with .45 ACP rounds and Buckshot and tell them to come get it the other half of me says to start boxing up what I can for ebay. I'M majorily frustrated at this point.

Sounds good but what about the one two that holds the fairing together in the middle? I broke one of these today too. 11 more minutes till beer thirty!

    Mate,
It sounds like the bike is too high tech for you.
I can have my fairing side off in 5 mins and have never broken a clip.
    Maybe a Harley would suit???

Practice makes perfect, and saves you and saves you a ton of money enough to justify some privatelabel oil like the Amsoil in the list of stories before this one....so you broke one or two....Pep boys got loads of easier to use and cheaper clips that only require a small trim tool for removal....having my "Old Guys Garage" to work in and a lift to put the bike on makes it all that much easier for me ....The faster you get working on it the more time you get to go riding....

HIJACK- hey middleagedcrazy, what color is that mini-enduro you have listed in profile? burnt orange?

the summer of 72 (probably?) about 6 of us kids in the hood all got bikes: the 1st guy got the Trail-70, the 2nd guy got the CL-70, i got the red SL-70, and my next door guy got the mini-enduro in the burnt orange. out of them all, i think the yami was the coolest. that orange paint was beautiful.

i havent had a dirt bike in over 20 years, but really really want one again. a local CL guy has a silver/grey DT-250 that keeps catching my eye. something more modern would probably make more sense, but a cool vintage bike has strong appeal to me.

check this guy out- he does restos on mostly small bikes. here is a 72 mini he did. Marbles Motors
    [IMG]

here are some of his SL-70s. of course, i had honda (ruby) red. my 1st and only brand spanking new bike.

HIJACK END- like you, having a 86, i find the older fairing mounts to be easier, but the new fangled pins should not the an issue after you touch them a time or 2.

I guess not everyone is as naturally talented as you when it comes to removing the fairings. You also seem to have a natural talent for being a wanker with a rude comment like that. The fact of the matter is that those push clips that Honda uses are poorly designed and cheaply made. I know dozens of people who have broken them even when taking extra caution.

I still have not replaced my two push pins. I pull on the lower panels and they are rock solid. Are these pins even needed?

17 hex bolts and 8 push clips take both fairings off and the lower one up front in the center. 2 more push clips get rid of the inner panels around the forks. I can have all the fairings off my bike including tail and front in 10 minutes or less. Oil change only requires the left fairing removed but adding the lower front helps tremendously with the filter.

For the record I have broken a few of them myself and they are in fact poorly made. I've got some that aren't tight, even brand new from Honda. At $7.50 a pop, your Honda dealer is raping you and you seem to be taking it with no lube. Last time I got some they were closer to $2.50 before they threw on my discount. Even then I still don't like the price of them and would like to come up with a better replacement. There are a select few places that the push clips are necessary due to space and a good idea as well but there are a lot of places that I Randy mentioned.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but it seems the problem lies with you. The rest of us seem to remove them without incident 98% of the time at worst. Push the center and pull em out. Gently (key word) spread the tip of them and push the center piece back out till the it sticks out past the head of the fastener.... its ready to reinstall and all you have to do is push it in till the head is flush and then push the center part till it is flush as well.

My biggest problem with the push clips is their tendency to walk away once I successfully remove them. Each time I take the fairings off, they have 10% less fasteners when they go back on

Sorry to insult your sensitivities, but the comment was meant tongue in cheek.
FWIW I agree the clips are rubbish, but we live with it.
If thats all it takes for you to label someone a wanker, I suggest you look in the mirror my friend.

If those clips don't have Honda printed on them. I don't want them on my bike. $7.50 is not that much money for the real McCoy. I also have a bridge for sale in NY.

Damn, they are just clips. many autoparts stores sell them by the box. A little searching will come up with a couple of sources where the things are just a few cents each. For seven bucks each you are in Dzus territory almost.

Searching? Someone should go pick them up for me and bring them to my house.

**disclaimer, that was a joke, not direct at anyone in this particular thread (I think) but a few here might understand it
we are using disclaimers now right cuz everyone's so sensitive?**

LOLZ! I can really sympathize with the first oil change fustrations! My first try I definetly broke two clips and I swear the bastard of a job took nearly 3 hours. The sun went down and my dad brought out a spare halogen worklight. It wasn't the actual first oil change as I had the honda shop do that one, I just wanted the bike to have pro service for the first one.

I ALWAYS plan extra time for first services, and I'm very mechanically inclined. I've worked as a plumber since I was 14 and gone to automotive school and worked on cars as a tech, but those stupid honda clips sure fooled me the first time. I wish I knew more bike folks locally to get together with to attempt maintaintance as a team, but my wife was well taught by here dad how to hold a flashlight and be a helper so I'm not so bad off. Doing your own wrenching may be painfully frustrating, but it really makes the owership real for me. I consider it "bonding" time.

I thought you said last week you lived in a cave on a mountaintop in Colorado. Do you have a house too?

We should let Randy know that gaffers tape is better and doesn't leave residue on the paintwork.
