Well, I guess some of us never grow up. I'm 59 years old, and I have ridden for 45 years. I ride in a pretty aggresive fashion, and always have enjoyed high speed traveling. The VFR, when ridden smartly through the gears, is at about 90mph when I click into 6th. Must be why I'm still seeing only 35mpg since I've been checking. Can't seem to break the habit, and it's a lot more fun than a Civic or something. So, I now am giving up on trying to wring a few more MPG. I'm going to flog this bike like it needs to be flogged. Yehaw:crazy:
I'm riding it to Arkansas early next month, and I'm going to flog it down there and back, and all the time I'm down there. I think it can take it!

I have the same problem, I get 35-38 when running a good clip w/ my 6th gen.
Best was 48mpg but that was 65mph on the highway to NJ.
Some claim 50 mpg.. Just don't know about that one.

I consistently get 34-36mpg on mine. I figured it was normal. As for the people who claim 50, that must be in a wind tunnel or on the freeway at 55mph behind a semi trailer. I've never seen it...

My 2nd gen gets 53 mpg at 70 mph but the old VFRs have those sophisticated fuel systems. You would think FI would give better mpg but my 98 Blackbird has carbs and get 43 on the road where the FI Blackbirds only get about 36.

Just about the most fun way to burn up a gallon of gasoline IMHO!!!!!! Can't wait to get down south where the curvy roads go on forever. Low police count there as well. Tires should be all the way feathered in on that trip! Got about an eight of an inch chicken strip now, with about 700 miles of local riding. Arkansas is a traction rich enviroment. Again.......Yehaw!!!!!!

    ATTA BOY MIK!!! :clap2:
I'm with you my friend, there's no point in growing up. Get out there and flog that pig.
VFR's weren't built to be trailer queens, they're meant to be ridden. You're right,it's ALL about having fun.
Keep up the good work. :peace:

I sold my BMW R1150 GS to get my brand new 2006 VFR last week-- with what that bike cost me in repairs the last year I can buy a hell of a lot of gas!

Mik, what is your operating temperature? Even when I ride the piss out of mine it is very hard for me to get mpg that low. Stuck thermostats which reduce the operating temperature are notorious for reducing the mpg as well.

Temps seem to be anywhere from 170 - 190, but waiting at a long light in mid 80 degree temps I saw 215. Normal? I think this bike just encourages my inner hooligan. Albeit, I ride my ZRX hard and average 42 mpg. My son and I raced the ZRX and the VFR the other day........I left the ZRX in 5th,and he had the VFR in 3rd......from 45mph to a pre limited 110mph. I was betting on Monster torque, but the VFR pulled me by 6 - 7 bike lengths by 110mph. Also learned that it doesn't take long for a VFR to hit 110 from 45 to 110 starting in 3rd (1 shift to 4th and it was there). Next chance we get we'll start with the Z bike in 4th and see what transpires. Think these antic's contribute to my mpg?

Speaking of Temps- my brand new 06 seems to be running hot- the fan has kicked in during some stop and go traffic and it was only about 52 degrees this morning- should I be worried?

Mik, you're fine. Just keep on riding her like she should be ridden :)

Bad, probably not. Pay attention to your coolant temp and see when the fan kicks in. The VFR gets hot pretty fast and runs much hotter than many other bikes in stop and go traffic mostly due to the side mounted radiators. Fan should kick on at 223F and turn off at either 212F or 210F... can't remember for certain. So long as it is between 168F-225F, you should be fine. If it keeps going up beyond 225F, you might have a problem such as a stuck thermostat.

I regularly get an average of 50 mpg. Whether it be all slab or cranking the twisties, I usually get 200 miles PLUS out of a tank.

Please enlighten us with your secret. I have tried as hard as I can and only been able to milk out 201 miles in a single tank a single time after forcing as much gas as I could in her and riding in a manner where granny with the handicap plate would pull away from me as if she were in a nitro powered funny car. Are you all stock? No gearing or fueling changes? Is someone towing you or do you shut the bike off when coasting down the mountains?

I figure it is a trade off. I average in the mid to high 30's depending on "Flog-Factor", but everytime I dismount I have a huge a$$ smile on my face...try doing that in a Prius

My worst was 32 (I think; can't remember...), average is 42, best was 50 in sixth gear, 4000-4500RPM, at a steady cruise (that happened exactly once).

I do most of my riding as daily commuting on the highway or around town but just can never seem to get anything over 42 with the occasional 43. There is very little play time involved with the exception of the short 3 mile ride to the highway and even that is depending on weather and the mood. I enjoy the savings that I get from the higher MPG of the VFR compared to my car however I never ever cringe when I go out on random weekends and trade those miles per gallon for smiles per gallon.

So far even after my thermostat chagne, though improved from the 23ish MPG I was getting I still get craptastic fuel economy weighening in so far at about 30. I'm not sure what to look at next that may be a culprit.

I have a '98. Oddly, I get better gas mileage when I am "flogging" it than when I am just cruising. Slabbing in 6th gear I will get around 42 - 45 mpg. when I take it out into the twisties it's more a constant 48. A few times I have averaged 50 mpg. In the city, it's more like 35. I don't know what would account for this, but I'm sure my bike is trying to tell me something.
