What 1st or 2nd Gen is less likely to drop valves/have engine issues?

Okay, I remember a post here that asked the same question but for the life of me I can find it. I'm looking into buying a 1st or 2nd gen (500, 700 or 1000) in good shape. My price limit is $2500 but I don't want to have to mess with the cams or oiling issues or valves dropping soooo.

Which ones had the engine issues? What year/engine size should I go for? I'm in New England so if anyone has and eye on one for sale I may be interested. I already have a 6th gen so I think a grand daddy would look nice sitting next to it in the garage. Thanks.

 

The second gen engine is pretty bullet proof, I have been trying to kill mine for two decades. Would think you could get a nice 750 for that price , you just may have to camp out and hunt for a bit.

Ya can't go wrong with an 86-87 750.

I would think about a VTR1000 V twin. Good deal for the money .

 

Oh yeah, I've been looking into those and TLS also. I had a 02 SuperHawk. I was in the process of doing the 6 spoke wheel upgrade and ended up crashing/totaling the bike. I wouldn't hesitate to go back. I did hate the fuel mileage though.
