So there I am riding home from work , nice evening the sun is setting and I take my exit, As I get to the end of the exit I proceed to merge into traffic and guess what............ no go.
I drift as far as I can once I am out of the road and look to see what happened. I find my chain dragging the ground and I figure easy fix, just put it back on. Then I notice the whole rear hub and sprocket are gone!!!!!!!!!!!!:frown:
I push it into a parking lot and inspect any damage, not really any. Now I am thinking how the hell did it come off??????????? Has anyone ever had this happen or heard of the bolt coming out??? I now think I have to find it, now it is dark:frown:
I walk down the road with little hope of finding it. By some miracle I look in the grass among all the bottles and trash that is typical on the side of the road and there it is:smile: I walk back up to the bike and decide that there is no way that I can ride it with the missing bolt..So I walk the bike all 500 lbs. 2 miles to my house and wonder how the hell did this happen............

WHAT bolt?? That big 46mm bastard??

Who had the hub apart for cushdrive replacement recently ??

The nut should be staked in place...if it's properly installed.

I am polite to my gen 3 and say that she is fit and firm and 500 lbs also. But we all know the truth. That thing weighs in at about 2 tons if you are pushing it.
I am so glad that a little grief and a little excerise is all that you suffered. Parts flyin off can be dangerous and even deadly. Good job gettin home in one peice, and finding the missing peice to the bike as well.

Well I am sore today from my adventure last night.. my arms and shoulders feel like spaghetti...I am glad it wasnt the new vfr :)

Squirrelman the part that came off is the locknut that secures the hub and sprocket to the axle... I ordered a new locknut and washer etc..

I am still wondering how it came off,,,,,,you said something about being staked into place..I am wondering if it wasnt on there properly?

It did take awhile but it is over, I think I might start a work out video on how to build up your upper body strength.

The 2 mile workout with the VFR.. only $19.99 order now :)

I worry when I have to push my bike, that it will tip away from me. It doesn't take much before that gets out of hand.

I'm surprised that there were not symptoms before the thing failed catastrophically. I wonder if it was lose enough that it moved enough to shear off, or could you tell that now looking at it?

There were a couple of times last night that I thought I was going to drop it.. Scary---thoughts of replacing plastics ran thru my head...

I think the reason I am so puzzled is that there were no signs of anything going wrong.

If the bolt was coming off for awhile I would of had some chain skip on the sprocket..or I would of felt something when cornering..

I am at work today, when I get home I am going to take a real close look, hopefully I dont find any damage..

One more ---I read about staking the nut ---this may have lead to the failure--
