I have an 85 VF500F and my gas tank has rusted through. Does anyone know if I can use a tank from the 84 or 86 models or am I stuck using only and 85?

    Thanks.

IIRC (and if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will come along to correct me) but the 84 and 85 tanks are compatible.

The 86 will require some modification.

That's what I was thinking, but wanted to confirm with more knowledgeable people. Thanks for the reply.

    Zombie thread revival!

So what are those modifications that one would need to do to make a 84/85 VF500F gas tank fit on an 86 VF500F?

Also, I heard that a VF750 or 700's gas tank fits on an 86 VF500F, is this true?

    Thanks!

The Petcock for the 86 is different then the 84-85. Depending on what bike you have and what tank/Petcock combo you use changes to the fuel lines may be in order.

I haven't heard that before.

Ah, so is it possible to take an '86 petcock and simply screw it onto the '84/'85 tank? Or did the diameters and sizes change as well?

I heard that from my riding instructor but I might have heard wrong.

The mounting area for the Petcock and on the tank are totally different on the 86.

From what I've read/seen only 86 petcock on 86 tanks.
